Americans are working, and still homeless.

In New York City alone, about one-third of families in shelters have at least one working adult. Some earn $40,000–$50,000 a year, but it’s still not enough to secure housing in today’s market. These are working parents, home health aides, delivery drivers—people doing everything “right,” but are unfortunately still struggling to stay afloat. (Source: The New York Times)

This isn’t the homelessness most people imagine.

It’s hidden, growing, and it affects families, children, and the working poor. At SVdP, we believe it’s time to broaden how we think about homelessness, who it affects, and to work proactively to prevent it.

Today is the Feast Day of Blessed Rosalie Rendu.

As a Daughter of Charity in one of the poorest districts of Paris for most of the 19th Century, Bl. Rosalie Rendu lived a life of courageous virtue, serving rich and poor alike through revolutions, epidemics, and economic upheaval. It was she who taught the young founders of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to serve the poor always with patience and understanding, saying, “If you have nothing to give, give yourself.”

Pray for us, Blessed Rosalie!

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul USA flips the traditional model...Instead of vulnerable individuals having to go out and seek things like food, clothing, and support, SVdP’s Vincentian volunteers come to them via the Home Visit, providing tangible assistance, a listening ear, and friendship.

One of the only things Donald Trump and Kamala Harris agreed on during the presidential campaign was the need to increase the federal Child Tax Credit.

The number of children experiencing homelessness increased nearly 33 percent in 2024. Of all age groups, children are at the highest risk of eviction.

Compared with 2023, 36,000 more children did not have a permanent place to live in 2024. They are likely to live with families who simply cannot afford a place to live. This can lead to poor performance in school and homelessness across the child's life.

*These numbers are based on a report from the 2024 Point-in-Time Count and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).*
