We could not help but wonder how many children grow up believing that their poverty makes them less important than others. How many little girls and boys hide when visitors arrive because they have nothing decent to wear? How many children feel ashamed to stand before others because their clothes are torn, their feet are bare, or their bodies are covered in dust? Nalwadda reminded us that poverty does not only affect what a child eats or wears; it can also affect how that child sees themselves and whether they feel worthy of love.

At 86, Mr. Steven is lame after breaking his leg, making movement difficult. His dear wife, Beatrice, aged 81, also struggles to stand properly because of persistent back pain. The very things many of us do without thinking standing up, walking outside, preparing a meal, or carrying something can become painful challenges for people in their condition. Growing old is already difficult, but growing old with pain, limited mobility, and the loss of your only child makes life even harder.
