Today we’re hanging out with Erik Gearhart!

Teaching: US History, Constitution
As well as: Director of Experiential Education & Risk Management

Get to know him: Experiential education, whether it be in the wilds or the classroom, has been Erik’s passion during his long career in education. When he wasn’t leading students on month-long NOLS and Outward Bound expeditions throughout the Sierra, Rockies, Cascades, Winds, and Alaska, or guiding climbing, surfing, snowboarding, and kayaking trips throughout the Pacific Northwest, he was teaching in schools that balanced rigorous academics with immersive experiential learning.

Prior to coming to Spring Street, Erik taught for 30 years in NAIS schools including Lakeside, Bush, Sage Ridge, and Athenian, as well as rural public schools and Arapaho and Shoshone Native American Schools. Erik draws upon all of these experiences to build interdisciplinary experiential programs in critical cultural landscapes that blend outdoor education with intercultural immersion and academic studies.

Erik’s leadership in experiential ed goes beyond our school. As the co-chair of the Northwest Independent Schools Outdoor Program Managers Group, he reviews peer school outdoor programs and keeps tabs on changing industry and legal practices. Erik is still glowing from this year’s successful Fall Trips, and he is incredibly excited to help bring back a solid selection of May Term Programs this spring.
