Beaver County Historical Research and Landmarks Foundation

Beaver County Historical Research and Landmarks Foundation BCHR&LF was incorporated as a nonprofit organization on December 14, 1971. It was later named the official Historical Society of Beaver County.

It was later named the official Historical Society of Beaver County, Beaver County Historical Research and Landmarks Foundation, located in the Vicary Mansion at Freedom, PA. The Beaver County Historical Research and Landmarks Foundation was incorporated as a nonprofit organization on December 14, 1971. The purpose of the Foundation is the collection, preservation, and interpretation of Beaver Cou

nty's historical sites, records and artifacts for the educational benefit of the public. The Foundation, which is supervised by a board of trustees is involved in a number of ongoing activities:

Operation of the Beaver County History Center at the Vicary Mansion
Publication of Milestones - a quarterly magazine about Beaver County history
Publication and reprinting of historical literature including: The 1976 Bicentennial Atlas, The 20th Century History of Beaver County, Rivers of Destiny - The Beaver County Bicentennial Book and A Guide to Historical Landmarks in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. Selection of up to four historic sites each year and dedication of these locations with historical markers. Distribution of Heritage markers for residences which meet historic criteria

So, Beaver County is so unique in that it has two county fairs. The Hookstown Fair, which takes place in the southwestern corner of the county in Greene Township, and the Big K**b Grange Fair, which is located in New Sewickley Township. Traditionally, fairs have both the carnival type attractions like rides, game booths and other attractions paired with agricultural displays and animal shows. And that’s exactly what the Hookstown and Big K**b Grange fairs still offer to this day.

I attended the Hookstown Fair this past week... This year's motto was, "Celebrating 80 years of Family, Farming, and Fair Fun." The fair began in 1946... The Big K**b Fair began in 1942 and will be held all this next week...

As noted in the fair brochure, "Celebrating 250 Years Of Freedom, Family, & PA Fairs."

The South Side Historical Village was established in 1995, and is located at the Hookstown Fairgrounds in Hookstown, Pennsylvania. Their Mission is To Collect, Preserve & Interpret Early American Life.

It happened 80 years ago in Rochester. The Sons of Italy Eagle (Aquila) Lodge No. 1070 had a Victory Banquet honoring member Veterans of World War II at the American Legion Home in Rochester, Sunday, May 26, 1946. This photo is on display at the Rochester Area Heritage Society.

So, yesterday BCHR&LF attended the PA Grant Seminar sponsored by State Representative, Joshua D. Kail, of the 15th Legislative District and State Representative, Roman Kozack, of the 14th Legislative District... This seminar was held at the IBEW, Local Union 712, located at 227 Sassafras Lane, Beaver... There were many people from different county organizations, profit, and nonprofit attending...  We heard ten speakers on various PA Grants... An informative day... Thank you to all who made this possible...

The NFL regular season gets started September 9. Here’s a blast from the past. Do you remember Franco’s Italian Army? In 1972, Franco Harris was drafted from Penn State to the Pittsburgh Steelers and was a full back. The same year, a fan club was started to support Harris, who was half Italian. The group was founded by East Liberty businessmen Al Vento of Vento’s Pizza, and Tony Stagno of Stagno’s Bakery. They and members of their group wanted to have fun, cheer on the Steelers and Harris. They wore Italian flag colored hard hats and brought lots of Italian food to the games to enjoy. Plus, a lot of various items became available such as this seat cushion located in a Beaver household. Did you have any Franco’s Italian Army items?

Truly great photo from the 1870's of the Blount lock in New Brighton. This was taken while the canal was still active . Photo taken from the old wooden Fallston Bridge before it was destroyed by flood water.
The Beaver Division Canal was a 31-mile (50 km) section of the historic Pennsylvania Canal system.
Built between 1831 and 1834, it ran from the Ohio River at Rochester/Beaver northward along the Beaver and Shenango rivers to Pulaski, Pennsylvania.

It served as the crucial first segment of the Beaver and Erie Canal (also known as the Erie Extension Canal), which eventually connected the Ohio River to Lake Erie.

The Rochester Area Heritage Society has lots of cool displays. Here is a Victrola, and it still works. One of their volunteers played a record featuring the Rochester Rams Marching Band and A Ca****la Choir. The songs were: Rochester High School, Onward Rochie, Touchdown and Alma Mater. The directors were James Kaplan and Philip Inman.
