Most people who know Aliquippa think of steel. 🏭 They think of Jones & Laughlin, of the Ohio River, of the workers who poured into that valley from a dozen different countries and built something enormous out of nothing but labor and fire.

What they don't know is who the town was named after.

Aliquippa was a Seneca leader, a woman of remarkable political intelligence who controlled a strategic point along the Ohio River in the mid-1700s. She was known to the French, the British, and a young George Washington, who visited her in 1753 and recorded the meeting in his journal. She was a queen in every practical sense: a diplomat, a power broker, a gatekeeper of the western frontier at a moment when empires were colliding over the land beneath her feet.

Here's what's interesting: when J&L Steel built its company town in Beaver County in the early 1900s, they named it after her. A Seneca queen became the namesake of one of Pennsylvania's most iconic steel towns. Most of the workers who lived there for generations never knew the story behind the name on their mailing address.

The mills are mostly gone now. The town is still there. And the name still carries something older than steel. 🌊

Did you know where the name Aliquippa came from?
