Old Fort Johnson is the original 1749 limestone house built by William Johnson, who later became Baronet of New York, British Superintendent of Indian Affairs and military commander at the Battles of Lake George and Fort Niagara. The house was fortified & garrisoned during the French & Indian Wars when many Native American councils were held on site. After Sir William built Johnson Hall in 1763, h

is son John Johnson lived in the house from 1763-1774. During the American Revolution, the house and all the Johnson possessions were confiscated and sold as Loyalist property. Sir John Johnson led many British raids through the Mohawk Valley during that war. He and many of his faithful tenants later became the first families of Canada. Old Fort Johnson was given to the Montgomery County Historical Society in 1906 and this nonprofit membership organization has preserved it as a public museum since then. The Society collections encompass the social, cultural, military and industrial past of the Mohawk Valley.

Curious what the Erie Canal was like through Schenectady, NY? Join us during the Erie Canal in the Mohawk Valley - mini-symposium 2026 as historian Scott Haefner will take you on a wonderful expedition through the time and across the city along the artificial waterway. The EC/MV Symposium will be at the Arkell Museum in Canajoharie on March 28th, 2PM to 4PM.

Scott Haefner is the site manager of Old Fort Johnson – owned and operated by the Montgomery County Historical Society. He graduated from the State University of New York, and has worked for the Schenectady County Historical Society, the General Electric Hall of History, and the New York State Museum. Haefner has served as the Historian for the City of Schenectady and the Town of Rotterdam.
