Today we, at Liberty ARC, join in celebrating Juneteenth, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, when on June 19th, 1865 the Union Army informed slaves in Galveston, Texas of their emancipation. They were some of the last slaves to be freed, more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Liberty ARC joins in celebrating the spirit of the day and the richness of African American culture. โค๏ธ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’›

It is with great sadness that the Liberty ARC family says goodbye to Michael DeMasi.

Michael will be remembered for his friendly and easy-going personality. He loved spending time with his family, especially his sister, and friends, and had a special place in his heart for his housemates and Liberty ARC staff. Michael enjoyed going out to dinner, watching the local high school basketball games, and spending time at the bowling alley.

At home you could find Michael out on his back porch soaking up the sunshine with a good cup of coffee. The only other thing that would make his cup of joe better was pairing it with a donut.

When Michael was not outside, you could find him reading magazines, working on puzzles, watching either sports, game shows, or the Three Stooges, and listening to the Beatles or the Monkees.

Michael will be greatly missed and fondly remembered. You can view Michael's obituary here: https://www.tributearchive.com/obituaries/48702336/michael-demasi

Why is a baseball stadium ๐ŸŸ๏ธ the coolest place to be? Because it's full of fans! ๐Ÿ˜†โšพ

We, at Liberty ARC, are proud fans of the Amsterdam Mohawks baseball team, including Markie, Joe, and Tony. At last night's game, Markie caught a free shirt ๐Ÿ‘•, and Joe bought a new baseball cap ๐Ÿงข to show his Mohawks' pride.

It is with great sadness that the Liberty ARC family says goodbye to Barb Quirini.

Over the years, Barb received a variety of services through the agency and attended various programs. She worked at the former Pine Ridge Industries and slowly retired by becoming the first to join Citi Club, which was then called Pine Ridge Day Hab.

Barbโ€™s proudest achievement in life is the day she married her husband, Karl, who she always brought up in conversation. The two looked forward to their monthly trips to Applebeeโ€™s, dinners at her home, or when they talked on the phone. Bard loved inviting staff to sit in her room so she could show them photos of her family, and her wedding photo was by far her favorite to showcase.

She also enjoyed sitting down and talking with anyone and everyone about anything and everything. Barb always had a smile on her face and loved to tell jokes. She also loved to rhyme, and would proudly proclaim, โ€œBarbara June went to the moon eating a Lorna Dune." Which was then quickly followed up by, "I'm a poet, and I didn't even know it."

In her downtime, Barb could be found knitting, bowling, shopping, and watching game shows or wrestling. She even attended the live wrestling matches when they came to town.

Barb will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by her Liberty ARC family. Memorial services will be held on Monday, June 29th at 4 p.m. in the Griswold Funeral Home at 1867 State Street in Schenectady.

Over 40 years ago, Sue Meiklejohn began working with people with disabilities in Schenectady County, and today we celebrate her retirement. ๐Ÿ’›

โ€œI was hired right out of college at Maple Ridge Day Center and thought Iโ€™d work here while I looked for a real job, and 41 years later here I am,โ€ said Sue, Liberty ARCโ€™s Director of Program Administration.

Sue began working as a Direct Support Professional for the former Schenectady ARC in the agencyโ€™s day habilitation program, where she found her calling in life โ€“ supporting people with disabilities.

Since that first day, Sue moved up through the ranks becoming Director of Day Programs, Director of Residential Services, Assistant Executive Director, Associate Executive Director, and Senior Associate Executive Director until her current role.

โ€œIโ€™ve had opportunities for growth over the years and have worked with and for amazing people,โ€ Sue said. โ€œIโ€™ve enjoyed getting to know the people we support and their families, who many of them Iโ€™ve known since I started, and Iโ€™m grateful for those relationships.โ€

โ€œWe celebrate Sueโ€™s career and the difference she has made in countless lives,โ€ said Candace Opalka, Liberty ARCโ€™s Chief Operating Officer. โ€œHer dedication, leadership, and heart have played an integral part in shaping the lives of the people we support, as well as the staff she has mentored throughout the years. We are grateful for the 40 years that Sue has given to so many people and for her dedication to our mission.โ€

On Tuesday a party was held at Maple Ridge with Liberty ARC staff and the people we support to celebrate Sue.

Congratulations, Sue, on your much-deserved retirement! ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŽ‰
