The Pallottine Renewal Center, Florissant, Missouri (C. 1972)
Tucked away on 85 acres of countryside north of St. Louis is one of the most unusual and fascinating religious retreat centers in Missouri.
With its long, three-story building, private guest rooms, indoor swimming pool, gymnasium, and distinctive circular chapel with a towering spire, the Pallottine Renewal Center looks almost like a secluded resort.
But this isn’t a hotel. It’s a place devoted to faith, reflection, and spiritual renewal.
Located along Old Halls Ferry Road in Florissant, the property was purchased by the Pallottine Missionary Sisters in 1966. Construction followed, and the center was dedicated in September 1969.
The Pallottines are part of a Roman Catholic religious movement founded in 1835 by St. Vincent Pallotti in Rome, Italy.
The Florissant complex was originally intended to provide a home for women preparing to become Catholic sisters, along with accommodations for retired sisters.
As the years passed, the facility expanded its mission to welcome religious retreats, conferences, and gatherings for groups of various denominations.
The vintage postcard advertised 85 acres of beautiful countryside, a library, conference facilities, private rooms, a gymnasium, an indoor swimming pool, and a chapel-in-the-round.
Perhaps the most fascinating feature is the building’s remarkable architecture, especially when viewed from above!
We’ve included an overhead view with this post that reveals something you might never notice from the ground. The main building was designed to resemble an angel with its wings spread wide!
Look closely at the aerial image and you’ll see the angel-like shape formed by the building’s unusual layout. It’s one of the more interesting examples of religious symbolism incorporated into Missouri architecture.
The distinctive circular chapel is another architectural highlight. Its design allows worshippers to gather around the altar, with everyone seated within approximately 35 feet of it.
And unlike so many Missouri landmarks from the 1960s and 1970s that have disappeared, the Pallottine Renewal Center is still standing and operating today!
Now known as the Pallottine Retreat & Conference Center, the facility continues welcoming visitors at 15270 Old Halls Ferry Road in Florissant, more than 55 years after its dedication.
It’s one of those fascinating pieces of Missouri history hiding in plain sight, a place thousands of motorists have probably driven past without realizing the remarkable architecture and history tucked away behind the trees.
Have you ever visited the Pallottine Renewal Center? And can you see the angel in the overhead photograph?
