Writers in Progress is the Valley's Literary Arts Center.

Writers in Progress' mission is to provide the community, inspiration and editorial guidance to enhance writers' lives and work. Our small workshops and one-on-one mentoring support attract people who want to take their writing to the next level in an encouraging environment. Located at the Brushwork Arts & Industry Building in Florence, MA, we also host a Live Literature reading series.

Lorrie Moore once said that, “for the writer, the facts of life are like ingredients in a kitchen cupboard.” The cake we make is the story we end up telling. “That,” she says, “is how life and art are related.” No matter what we write, our experiences, observations, and inclinations are the greatest inspiration and fodder for our work. In this weekly generative workshop, writers will receive a series of prompts to help them tap into their deepest material and move them into a sustained period of writing. Afterward, we’ll have the opportunity to share our work and receive thoughtful feedback from the group.

This workshop will take place online.

Even the most seasoned writers have difficulty carving out time and summoning inspiration. This popular, productive morning workshop provides quiet, structured writing time among peers, a handful of fabulous prompts to get you rolling, and the inspiration to support your writing practice.

Starting with a variety of imaginative prompts, we warm up, engage in a sustained writing period (over an hour), then share our work and receive thoughtful, encouraging feedback. Each session includes writing time, craft tips, quotes, supportive discussion, and advice on how to sustain a creative life in challenging times… Come for inspiration, structure, and a supportive community, and make serious headway on your projects! Appropriate for all levels and genres. These popular workshops fill fast!

This workshop will not meet the week of December 21st and 28th.

This workshop is for writers who already know what they want to write, but need the time, structure, and accountability to actually get it done. In this ten-week workshop, we’ll meet in our cozy studio for dedicated writing time to help you stay on track. Each session offers at inspiring prompts, at least two hours of time to write, snacks to keep you going, coffee, tea, and a brief check-in at the end to share your progress or a bit of your work. Whether you’re working on a novel, memoir, poetry, or something in between, the Sunday Writing Studio gives you the time and space to show up and get to work alongside other writers. The energy is peaceful and motivating—like writing alone, but better. If you’ve been craving a consistent writing practice, a welcoming space, and the accountability that turns “maybe someday” into significant pages, this workshop is for you.

This workshop meets in-person at our Florence studio.
