Meet Amy 💙

Volunteers are at the heart of everything we do at Type 1 United and Camp Leo. From creating safe and supportive spaces to helping children and families feel understood, volunteers like Amy play a vital role in building connection, confidence, and community for those living with Type 1 diabetes.

Our programs are made possible by people who show up with compassion, energy, and a willingness to make a difference — and the impact reaches far beyond camp.

✈️💙 The sky is no longer the limit for youth living with Type 1 Diabetes.

Join Alaska Airlines pilot and fellow T1D Joe Soter for an unforgettable day exploring the world of aviation at Alaska Airlines Aviation Day on May 30, 2026 in Renton, WA!

This free event invites youth ages 11–18 living with T1D to discover exciting careers in aviation through hands-on activities, class sessions, and real conversations with professionals across the industry. From pilots and engineers to coders, dispatchers, customer service agents, creatives, and more — the possibilities are wide open.

Before 2019, people living with type 1 diabetes weren’t permitted to fly commercially in the United States. Today, that has changed — and this event is all about showing the next generation what’s possible.

We’re excited to help share this opportunity with our T1D community and encourage youth to dream big, explore boldly, and take to the skies. 💙

Weekends like this are a little preview of what summer at Camp Leo feels like 🌲 ☀️🐦 🎶

Fresh air, tall trees, open space to run around, and time to just be a kid.

From archery and field games to quiet moments under the trees, camp is where connection grows—confidence, friendships, and independence too.

Whether you’re heading into elementary, middle, or high school, there’s a place for you here. And for a few days, diabetes isn’t the thing that sets you apart—it’s just part of the background.

We need volunteers! Know anyone who might be interested?

Looking to use your clinical skills in a way that’s hands-on, meaningful, and deeply impactful? Type 1 United is seeking medical volunteers to join us at Camp Leo, where you’ll help provide safe, supportive care for campers living with Type 1 diabetes—all while being part of a community that truly understands.

This is a 4–6 day, live-in volunteer experience where you’ll:

Support a cabin of 6–10 campers
Provide ongoing diabetes management and general medical care
Collaborate with a team of experienced medical professionals
Help create a space where diabetes becomes the norm—not the exception

We’re looking for:

RN, LPN, ARNP, MD, EMT, Pharmacist (PharmD/RPh), Registered Dietitian—and nursing or medical students with relevant experience or strong interest in diabetes care.

Whether you’re building clinical experience, exploring pediatrics or endocrinology, or simply looking to give back in a meaningful way—this is an opportunity to grow while making a real difference.

🦁 Why Camp Leo Is Truly One-of-a-Kind:

There are other Type 1 camps out there — but Camp Leo is the only residential/overnight camp in Western Washington created specifically for kids with Type 1 Diabetes.

What makes that so important?
Because when campers stay overnight, they’re surrounded by a full community that understands T1D — supported by 24/7 medical care from licensed medical volunteers, including endocrinologists, nurses, diabetes educators, and trained volunteers.

A few things parents always ask (and love to hear):
• Safety first: Every camper receives individualized diabetes care with round-the-clock monitoring.
• Carb counts + meals: All meals and snacks are carb-counted and prepared with T1D needs in mind.
• Device-friendly: Pumps, CGMs, injections — whatever your child uses, our medical volunteers can support it.
• Independence-building: Campers learn new skills, build confidence, and experience true community.
• Fun comes standard: Theme days, cabin activities, outdoor adventures, talent shows, and so much more.

Camp Leo is where kids feel understood, safe, and empowered… and where lifelong friendships begin. 💙
