Today, the members, stewards, and leadership of IUE-CWA Local 89119 pause to observe Memorial Day.
🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Working daily alongside our military here at NAS Fallon, we are constantly reminded of the immense dedication required to protect our nation. Today, however, our focus is entirely on those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.
🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Memorial Day is more than just a long weekend or the start of summer. It is a sacred time to honor the brave men and women who stood on the line, answered the call, and never made it home. We owe our freedoms, our security, and our way of life to their selflessness.
🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
To our members who are veterans, to the military families in our community, and to everyone missing a loved one today—we stand with you in remembrance and gratitude.
Let us honor their memory not just with words, but by supporting one another and upholding the values of community and solidarity they fought to protect.

🇺🇸Have a safe and meaningful Memorial Day.🇺🇸

Transparency Check: How Dues are Actually Calculated 📊

❓️We’ve seen some questions lately about how much it costs to be a member and who decides that amount. To keep everyone on the same page, we want to provide the "proof" and the math behind our dues structure.

📜The "2.25 Rule"

Per the CWA National Constitution (Article VI), the minimum dues for all members are set at 2.25 hours of pay per month.

❓️Why 2.25 hours?

This isn't a number we just made up in Fallon. It is a national standard designed to be fair:

1️⃣It’s Proportional: If you make more, you contribute a bit more. If you are a newer hire at a lower scale, your dues are lower. It ensures no one is disproportionately burdened.

2️⃣It’s an Investment: This fraction of your monthly labor (roughly 1.3% of your gross pay) goes directly into the legal, bargaining, and defense funds that protect the other 160+ hours you work every month.

💰Where does the money go?

1️⃣Local 89119: The majority stays right here to pay for training, attorney fees, shirts and many other operating costs to run our local. No one in our Local gets any stipend to perform thier duties.

2️⃣The Defense Fund: A portion goes into a national "war chest" that is only used to support members during strikes or major legal battles against massive corporations.

📊The Math:

If you want to check your own paystub, just take your base hourly rate and multiply it by 2.25. That is the monthly total.

📃The Proof is in the Contract:

👏We are proud to be part of the CWA because it gives us the backing of a national powerhouse while keeping our local operations transparent. If you ever want to see the specific language in the National Constitution, just ask a steward.

Your investment keeps our local strong and our contract enforceable. Let's keep moving forward together.

Knowing the Boundaries: What the Union Does vs. Doesn’t Do 🔍

To have a strong Local, we need to be clear on what our "lane" is. There is often a misunderstanding about what a union can actually control. Here is a quick breakdown:

✅ What IUE-CWA Local 89119 DOES:

1️⃣Negotiates the "Price" of Your Labor: We bargain for your hourly wages, shift differentials, and Health & Welfare (H&W) fringe rates.

2️⃣Enforces the Contract: If the company violates the written agreement (like skipping seniority for overtime or ignoring vacation rules), we file grievances to fix it.

3️⃣Provides Legal Defense: We ensure "Just Cause" is met. Without us, you are an "at-will" employee who can be fired for almost any reason. With us, the company must prove their case.

4️⃣Safety Advocacy: We push for OSHA compliance and the right to refuse unsafe work without retaliation.

❌ What the Union DOES NOT Do:

1️⃣Manage the Facility: The union doesn't own the hangar or the break rooms. We don't decide on floor layouts, parking spot markings, or building maintenance.

2️⃣Run Day-to-Day Operations: The company (Management) still has the "Right to Manage." They decide which aircraft are worked on and what the production schedule looks like.

3️⃣Act as a "Magic Wand": We can’t fix things that aren't in the contract. If it’s not written in the CBA, we have to wait until the next negotiation cycle to try and put it in there.

Why this matters:

📜When we focus our energy on the Contract, we win. When we understand exactly what we are fighting for, we can hold the company accountable for the things they must do, while pushing them to improve the things they should do.

More Than a Job—It’s a Brotherhood 🛠️

Out here at NAS Fallon, we do high-stakes work. We keep the birds in the air and the mission moving. That kind of work requires a crew that trusts each other and has each other's backs.

Local 89119 is how we have each other's backs off the flight line. It’s how we ensure the guy working next to us is treated fairly, paid what he’s worth, and protected from corporate overreach.

When we stick together, we aren't just "employees"—we are a unified front. If you haven't signed your card yet, or if you’ve been on the fence, now is the time. Let’s show the company that Local 89119 is here to stay.

Stand with us. Stay Union. Stay Strong.

The "Floor" vs. The "Ceiling" 📈

As SCA contractors, the Department of Labor sets a "Minimum Wage" for our jobs (the Area Wage Determination). That is the FLOOR. The company is legally allowed to pay you that minimum and not a penny more.

🛠The Union’s Job is to Build the CEILING.
Without IUE-CWA Local 89119, the company has every incentive to drop us all down to that floor to save money. Our membership is what gives us the power to negotiate:

💰 Higher hourly rates than the DOL minimum.
💰 Better Health & Welfare (H&W) distributions.
💰 Paid time off that exceeds the bare legal requirement.

📉When membership drops, the "ceiling" starts to lower. Staying a member is the only way to keep our pay and benefits heading in the right direction—UP.

What Happens if the Union Isn't There? 🤔

It’s easy to think of the union as just "dues and meetings," but it’s actually the wall between you and total company control. Take a second to imagine a shift without our contract:

1️⃣Overtime: The company could assign it based on favoritism, not seniority or fairness.

2️⃣Schedules: Your "regular" shift could be changed with zero notice and no "shift differential" pay.

3️⃣Respect: Without a grievance process, your supervisor’s "bad mood" becomes your problem, and you have no one to call for backup.

We don’t realize how much the union does for us until we face a problem alone. Don’t wait until you’re in the office facing discipline to realize the value of your membership. Let's keep Local 89119 standing tall.💪💪💪

We Are Better When We’re All At The Table 🗣️

🚶‍♂️We’ve noticed some of our coworkers stepping away from the union, and we want to be clear: we want you back ❗️

😡We know frustrations happen. Whether you feel like you aren't being heard, or you aren't sure if the dues are worth it, we want to hear your perspective. But the best way to change the union is to be in the union. We need your voice, your experience, and your input to make Local 89119 the best it can be.

⁉️If you have questions, frustrations, or ideas for how we can be better, let’s talk. Our doors are open. Find a Local Steward or Officer and ask questions. Let’s fix the problems from the inside rather than walking away. See you at the next meeting!

Investing in Your Future 📈

🧐It’s easy to focus on the paycheck you get today, but a union is about the career you’re building for the next 10, 20, or 30 years.

📜Your retirement security, your long-term health benefits, and the ability to retire with dignity are all written into the contracts that Local 89119 fights for. Every time someone drops their membership, we lose a little bit of the "cushion" that keeps our standards competitive with the private sector.

💰Think of your union dues as an investment in your own career stability. We aren't just protecting today—we are protecting the future for every member in this shop. Let’s keep building something that lasts.

Safety is Our Standard ✈️

👩‍🏫As aviation professionals, we know that there is no "cutting corners." The same principle applies to our workplace. A strong union isn't just about pay—it’s about having the power to stand up for safe practices.

💪When our union is strong, we have a collective voice that management listens to regarding working conditions, and safety procedures. When the union weakens, those safety discussions often get pushed to the bottom of the priority list in favor of cutting corners.

📈Don’t let our standard slip. A high membership rate gives us the leverage to insist on the resources we need to do our jobs safely and correctly. Keep the union strong, keep the workplace safe.

Fairness Matters: Why Membership is a Shared Responsibility ⚖️

In our workplace, union protections—like the grievance process and negotiated benefits—apply to everyone, whether they are a dues-paying member or not. This creates a challenging reality:

😳The cost of representing everyone falls on the shoulders of the members who choose to step up.

😎When we all contribute, we share the cost of the professional experts, legal counsel, and negotiators who fight for our wages and benefits.

😵When membership drops, we are asking the "few" to carry the load for the "many."

We believe in fairness. If you rely on the contract for your pay, your safety, and your job security, please consider standing with your coworkers by becoming a member. Let’s make sure we are all pulling our weight together.
