Evanston Local #742 Honor Guard Members attended the Annual IAFF Fallen Firefighter Memorial in Colorado Springs. 288 IAFF firefighter Line of Duty Deaths were honored from 2025 and their names were placed on the memorial wall. We stopped to remember our fallen Local #742 members who are etched on the walls on those hallowed grounds.

Today members of the technical rescue team participated in the monthly MABAS Division 3 drill hosted here in Evanston at the South water tower. Crews worked on high angle rope rescues rappelling down the tower to a simulated victim stuck at height where they secured the victim to their harness and lowered them to the ground. Our members train every day to prepare themselves to handle any emergency situations.

Today we celebrate and honor the sacrifices of all those who paved the way for the Labor Movement as it exists today.

53 years ago Local 742 was working 56 hours a week without a contract. 52 years ago our fore-bearers went on strike, leading to the city agreeing to a written contract. With steady perseverance, our Local has improved working conditions, and reduced our hours worked to 49.8 hours a week. Change is incremental, the duty to serve the community is constant, and our progress is built off the ones before us. Happy Labor Day!

Today, Evanston Firefighters took advantage of a rare opportunity to utilize a building set for demolition to train with on duty crews. Firefighters trained on vertical ventilation techniques.

Commercial construction can present unique challenges for firefighters while they work to ventilate heat and smoke from a burning building. Often times, many layers of different roofing materials can make cutting a hole in a commercial roof a challenging and physically demanding task.

This morning Station 21 crews reviewed roof operations. Vertical ventilation is a key component of firefighting because it provides relief and a path for heat and smoke to escape a structure while firefighters put out the fire inside.
