Dharamsala Animal Rescue

Dharamsala Animal Rescue Our mission is to create a better world for animals and people by ending the human/street dog conflict. My life was good, but something was missing.
(242)

When I was about to turn 40, I decided I needed to do something that would really expand my horizons. A feeling of making a true contribution on this planet was lacking deep down inside of me. The need to fill that void led me to Dharamsala, India to spend several weeks volunteering at a preschool. Working with the children proved completely overwhelming, as did the chaotic culture of India. What

truly got to me, however, was seeing an injured and bloody dog lying in the temple where the school was held, apparently left to die. It broke my heart to watch the dog suffer — and to see how little the local people seemed to care about his condition. I was saddened by the reactions, and felt helpless. Incredibly, my path crossed with a local man who knew someone who could help. Miraculously, my actions and concern sparked a change. Today, I am happy to report the dog, Tommy, is healthy and cared for by this very village. Upon returning home to the USA, I knew I needed to do everything in my power to improve the lives of the street animals. I created Dharamsala Animal Rescue to raise awareness about the animals of Dharamsala and fund local projects.” – Deb Jarrett, Founder

🥺 Maybe don’t get married or have children.
Just… get dogs. 🐶🤍

Because dogs somehow become family in the gentlest way possible.

One day they’re just sitting awkwardly in your house and suddenly they become:
💛 your reason to wake up early
💛 your little shadow around the house
💛 your comfort after hard days
💛 your happiest hello every single time you return

🐾 They just look at you like:
“YOU’RE HOME!!!!!” 🥹

And nothing compares to that kind of love.

No complicated expectations.
No pretending.
No conditions.

Just tiny paws following you to the bathroom,
dramatic stares while you eat food,
warm cuddles at night,
and a soul that somehow loves you with its whole heart every single day.

🐶 Life becomes softer with dogs in it.

Messier too, yes.
There’s fur everywhere.
Your bed stops belonging to you.
Privacy disappears completely.

But suddenly…
home feels warmer.
Loneliness feels smaller.
And ordinary days start feeling special.

Because somewhere in the middle of all the chaos…
there’s always a wagging tail waiting for you. 🤍

🌱 Real change begins when communities choose to learn together.

Bagiyara Village found us on Instagram and invited DAR to conduct our education and awareness program in their village… and of course, we had to say yes. 🫶🏻

What followed was one of the most meaningful days for our team. 🤍

Children, students, adults, and elders all came together,
not just to talk about dogs, but to learn how humans
and community animals can safely coexist.

🐾 Because awareness is not just information.
It’s protection.
For people and for dogs.

Throughout the session, we focused on practical, life-saving education:
→ understanding dog behaviour
→ safe interaction techniques
→ dog bite prevention
→ rabies awareness
→ sterilization and coexistence

🥺 One of the most impactful moments?
Teaching children what to do if a dog runs toward them.

🌳 “Be a Tree”
Stand still. Hands together. Eyes down.
Stay calm until the dog passes.

🪨 “Be a Stone”
Curl your body inward. Protect your head and face.
Stay quiet and still.

Simple techniques but ones that can prevent panic, fear, and dangerous reactions. 🤍

We also taught what you must do if you get bitten:
→ wash the wound under running water with soap for at least 20 minutes
→ immediately get anti-rabies treatment

Because awareness saves lives.

🫂 But what touched us most wasn’t just the participation…
It was the initiative!

Bagiyara Village didn’t just invite us.
They supported this work too…
Emotionally, financially, and wholeheartedly.

They raised ₹11,000 to help us conduct these programs,
because they understand creating real change takes:
Effort. Resources. People & Time.

And we are SO grateful for their help!

🌱 This is what progress looks like:
villages choosing education over fear, children learning empathy early,
and communities taking active steps toward coexistence.

Every awareness session brings us one step closer to a safer, kinder India for both humans and dogs. 🐾🤍

⚠️ Emergency Rescue: maggots are eating Bijlee alive 💔

We received a call about an old street dog suffering from severe maggot wounds around her ear and neck.

At that moment, our DAR team was occupied with rescues and treatment work, so stepped in to help bring her safely to the shelter. 🤍

😢 When Bijlee arrived, her condition was devastating.

Deep wounds around her left ear and neck.
Maggots infesting the flesh. Flies constantly swarming around her face.

And the hardest part?
🥺 Wounds do not become this severe overnight.

They begin small.
Treatable. Manageable.

But when suffering is ignored for too long…
it turns into something unbearable.

Every movement for Bijlee must have hurt.
Every second filled with discomfort, infection, and exhaustion.

And on top of all this her body is already weak from renal disorder. 💔

🩺 Bijlee is now under our care,
but her condition is critical and needs urgent treatment NOW!

She needs:
→ Deep wound cleaning and maggot removal
→ Medication and infection control
→ Supportive care and nutrition
→ Monitoring for her renal complications

🆘 But we cannot cover Bijlee’s treatment without YOUR DONATIONS.
No amount is too small,
even ₹50 will help!!

Please help us give Bijlee comfort, relief, and another chance to heal. 🤍

🥺 Stella kept walking on her injured paw that hurt her every single day.

What started as a small wound slowly became something much more serious. 💔

A painful tumor formed on her paw. The swelling grew.
And even simple things like standing or walking became difficult.

But Stella?
She never stopped being sweet.

🤍 Still wagging her tail.
Still walking up for cuddles.
Still looking at everyone with the softest little eyes.

🩺 At DAR, her healing journey began.

Medication.
Rest. Careful treatment.

And eventually… amputation became the only way to truly free her from pain.

🥺 It sounds scary to us.
But dogs don’t think the way humans do.

They don’t sit there wondering what they lost.

They just want to run again. 🐾

And honestly?
That’s exactly what Stella did. 🥹

🤍 The moment her pain started disappearing,
her personality started shining even brighter.

Now she zooms around with the cutest little tripod hop.
She smiles constantly. She demands attention like it’s her full-time job. 💛

Running around. Making friends.
Living life like she was always meant to.

🐾 And the sweetest part?
She finally looks comfortable in her own body again.

No more pain.
No more struggling through every step.

Just Stella…
being the happiest little girl ever. 🥺🤍

⚠️ Emergency Rescue: Baloo’s skin condition is SO severe, his face has stared cracking!

Baloo’s feeder reached out to us after noticing something was terribly wrong.
His fur had started falling out from different parts of his body.

The fur on his face had become thick, strange, and painfully matted.
And day by day… it kept getting worse. 😔

🥺 When Baloo arrived at DAR, his condition told the story.

Severe sarcoptic mange.
Constant itching.

Painful skin disease that never really lets the body rest.
The kind of suffering that slowly takes over every moment of a dog’s life.

Imagine surviving on the streets while your body feels uncomfortable all the time. 💔

And yet… Baloo stayed friendly.
Gentle. Trusting.

🩺 His recovery has now begun.
But healing from a severe skin disease takes time, patience, and constant care.

Baloo urgently needs:
→ Medical treatment for mange
→ Medicated baths and skin care
→ Proper nutrition and supportive care
→ Vaccination and monitoring during recovery

🆘 But we cannot cover Baloo’s treatment without YOUR DONATIONS.

To fully cover his rescue-to-recovery care, we need ₹19,200 ($200) for:
🐾 treatment
🐾 medication
🐾 medicated baths
🐾 vaccination

🥺 But even ₹50 helps!
No amount is too small.

🙏 Please help us give Baloo the comfort every dog deserves.

Because no animal should have to suffer silently in their own skin. 🥺

🕊️ RIP sweet Simba… our gentle little soul. 🤍

Some dogs don’t need to be loud to be unforgettable.

Simba was one of them.

🥺 In a shelter filled with rescues, treatments, and heavy days…
he was peace.

The calm in every storm.
The quiet comfort after heartbreak.
The warm hug that somehow made difficult days feel easier to survive.

💔 At DAR, there are moments that stay with us forever.

And Simba…
will always be one of them.

🐾 The way he leaned into cuddles.
The way he sat beside us so softly.
The way his presence alone could make the whole world feel lighter.

As if he was quietly saying:
“You’re safe. I’m here.” 🤍

And somehow… that was enough.

🥺 We still can’t believe we have to live in a world without him.

Without his warmth.
Without his gentle eyes.
Without the little comfort he brought into every room he entered.

But love like Simba’s doesn’t disappear.

🤍 It stays with all of us.
In the memories wrapped around him.
In the shelter corners that still feel a little emptier without him there.

🫂 Rest now, sweet angel.
No more pain. No more heavy days.

Just endless sunshine, soft naps, and all the love you carried so gently through this world.

You will always be our family.
Always our comfort.
Always our Simba. 🤍🕊️

🥺 Raveena Tandon rescued 14 Indie puppies…
and suddenly people are calling it “beautiful.”

But the truth is?
It was always beautiful. 🤍

💔 The problem was never that Indies were less lovable.
Maybe we just never chose to see them that way.

While expensive foreign breeds became trends and status symbols…
our own dogs stayed outside.

On roads.
Under cars.
Waiting for someone to stop and choose them too.

🐾 And still… Indies continue to love humans with their whole hearts.

They survive our heat.
Our streets.
Our rejection.

And yet, the second someone shows them kindness…
they trust again. 🥺

🫂 Raveena didn’t just rescue puppies during her Manali trip.
She reminded millions of people of something important:
that Indies deserve homes too.

That love doesn’t come with a price tag.
That loyalty doesn’t need a foreign breed certificate.

🤍 The dogs we ignore every day…
are often the ones with the biggest hearts.

So maybe this moment isn’t just about celebrity influence.
Maybe it’s about finally changing the way India sees its own dogs.

🌱 Because a kinder country begins the moment we stop asking:
“What breed is it?”
And start asking: “How can I help?”

🥺 Maybe if more people open their hearts to Indies…
fewer dogs will grow up believing the streets are the only home they deserve.

🏃‍♀️ Two women. 11 kilometers. 3,000 meals for our recovering street dogs. 🥺

This May, DAR Director, Pratibha ()
and Community Engagement Manager Himani Negi ()
are running at the Bir Running Festival 2026…

Not for medals.
Not for applause.
But for hungry dogs waiting at our shelter gates every single day. 🤍

💔 Behind every rescue at DAR,
there’s a dog recovering.

A dog healing from surgery.
A puppy fighting illness.
An old street dog finally resting safely after years of survival.

And every one of them waits for the same thing:
their bowl of food. 🍲🐾

So our women are taking on 11 kilometres to raise ₹1 lakh ($1000),
enough to provide 3,000 meals for our rescues
and ABC patients for one whole month.

Because healing doesn’t end after rescue. 🩺
Recovery needs:
→ food
→ medicine
→ warmth
→ safety
→ and people who don’t give up

🥺 Every tired step they take…
means fuller bellies for dogs who have already suffered enough.

This run is more than a marathon.
It’s:
🐾 endurance for survival
🐾 compassion in motion
🐾 love turning into action

🫶🏻 Will you help us reach our goal?

Because while they run the distance…
you can help carry these dogs toward healing. ❤️

🥺 Fifi was quietly suffering on the streets.

A caller reached out to our helpline after noticing something was terribly wrong!

Her skin condition had become severe.

There was active bleeding.
And painful swelling around her neck that kept getting worse.

Pashuholic stepped in to help rescue her,
and safely brought her to DAR. 🤍

😔 When Fifi arrived,
her tiny body told the story.

Painful skin disease.
Constant irritation.

The kind of discomfort that never really lets you rest.
And yet… she stayed friendly.

Still wagging her tail.
Still walking up to people.
Still choosing trust, even after everything she was going through. 🥺

🩺 Her recovery didn’t happen overnight.

Medication.
Careful treatment.
Regular cleaning.
Good food.
Patience every single day.

🤍 But slowly… things began to change.

The swelling reduced.
Her skin started healing.
The bleeding stopped.

And little by little…
the sad little doggo who came to us uncomfortable and exhausted…
started turning into a happy, playful baby again. 🥹

🐾 And today?
Fifi has recovered beautifully.

Now she spends her days being exactly how a loving soul should be:
naughty, playful, curious, and full of life. 💛

Running around.
Making friends.

Enjoying the simple joy of finally feeling comfortable in her own body again.

🫂 Stories like Fifi’s remind us:
sometimes healing starts with something very small…

One person noticing.
One rescue. One chance.
And suddenly… an entire life changes. 🤍
