Pennsylvania Master Naturalist

Pennsylvania Master Naturalist Building a corps of knowledgeable, skilled and dedicated volunteers to conserve PA’s natural heritage

Pennsylvania Master Naturalist is a statewide partnership initiative that aims to connect people with their local ecosystems through intensive natural science training and local conservation service work. It is a venture directed toward developing a local corps of “master volunteers and service providers” to offer education, outreach and service dedicated to the understanding and management of nat

ural areas within their communities. Pennsylvania Master Naturalist is designed to teach adult participants about the natural history and ecology of Pennsylvania’s diverse ecoregions. Initially, students will receive 55 hours of classroom and field instruction. Teaching involves outdoor activities, PowerPoint slides, suggested resources including a comprehensive training manual developed for the course, and interaction with other students and instructors. Upon graduating from training, Pennsylvania Master Naturalists are expected to complete 30 hours of volunteer service in their first year and 20 hours annually thereafter along with annual continuing education requirements.

🐸 iNaturalist Taxon of the Month: Amphibians!

June is a busy season for amphibians in Pennsylvania! Wetlands are alive with frog and toad choruses, salamanders are active in streams and under logs, and you might even spot a bright red eft wandering the forest floor.

👀 Keep your eyes (and ears!) open we can’t wait to see what you find!

📸 PMN volunteers: add your observations to the PMN iNaturalist Project to contribute.

🌸 It’s pinxter season in Pennsylvania!

The pinxter flower (Rhododendron periclymenoides), also known as pink azalea, is blooming across woodlands and stream edgesoften before its leaves even emerge.

These soft pink blooms aren’t just beautiful they provide an important nectar source for bees, butterflies, moths, and hummingbirds, supporting pollinators early in the season.

🌿 Keep an eye out for this native shrub in dappled, acidic woodland habitats

🌿 Happy PA Native Species Day!

This month, we’re celebrating plants as our iNaturalist Taxon of the Month and there’s no better time to highlight the importance of native species.

Native plants are the foundation of healthy ecosystems, supporting pollinators, birds, and wildlife across Pennsylvania. Every observation helps us better understand and protect the natural world around us.

Get involved by documenting the plants you see and contributing to our iNaturalist Project your observations make a difference! 💚
