According to Maxine Bradbury’s Profiles of Ellis, Ks II:
Teddy Roosevelt stopped for awhile in Ellis on one of several cross country trips. While in Ellis, he meet Mother Smith. A confrontation between the two happened for reasons unknown. Mother Smith gave him a “tongue lashing.” Not given a chance to respond, Teddy wrote her a long letter once back on the train and mailed it to her from Sharon Springs.
