60 Years Ago Today: Accra International Airport Regains Its Original Name

Sixty years ago today, a significant moment in Ghana’s national story unfolded as Accra International Airport regained its original name- Kotoka International Airport.

This change was more than symbolic. It reflected a turning point in our nation’s history- a time of political transition, national reflection, and renewed identity.

The airport, originally known as Accra International Airport, was renamed in honor of Lieutenant General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka following the events of 1966. The restoration of the name marked an important chapter in Ghana’s evolving democratic and historical journey.

Airports are gateways to nations. They are the first impression visitors receive and the last memory travelers carry home. For Ghana, Kotoka International Airport stands not only as a transportation hub but as a reminder of our complex political history and the resilience of our people.

As we reflect on this day 60 years ago, we remember that history is not just about events- it is about identity, lessons, and growth. Ghana’s story continues to unfold, shaped by moments like this that define who we are as a nation.

🇬🇭 Let us continue to honor our history while building a stronger future.

Today, we honor the life and enduring legacy of Jesse Jackson (1941–2026), a steadfast champion for justice, human dignity, and collective liberation. As a minister, organizer, and global advocate for civil rights, Reverend Jackson devoted his life to broadening the promise of democracy for communities too often pushed to the margins. From his work during the Civil Rights Movement alongside Martin Luther King Jr. to his leadership through the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition and beyond, his voice resonated with conviction, courage, and hope.

During Black History Month, we pause to reflect on leaders whose bravery shaped our present and challenged us to envision a more just and inclusive future. Maya Angelou acknowledged Reverend Jackson’s profound cultural and political influence in her 1978 poem Ain’t That Bad?, celebrating a generation marked by Black brilliance, confidence, and strength.

May we honor his legacy not only in remembrance, but through meaningful action that advances the work he so passionately carried forward. 🕊️ Rest in power.
