Garlic Mustard is back with a vengeance this year at Petersen Island Woods Preserve but our interns are killing it out there (Literally)!

Garlic Mustard (Alliaria petiolata) is a highly invasive biennial plant that can easily overtake ecosystems. In order to stop its spread you have to pull the plant and collect the seed pods before they start to bulge, which starts to happen in mid to late June.

There are so many flowers blooming in the preserves lately...

However, look out! Don't let these pretty petals fool you. All of the flowers in this post are either invasive or naturalized species of this area. If you see any of these flowers they're better off looking pretty in the vase than in your yard.

Invasive flowers often don't have the predators that native plants have so they tend to over-populate areas and out compete their native rivals.

Rather than making a bouquet of native flowers or buying some at the supermarket, try decorating with some of these pesky species instead.

Take an early morning strole through Beulah Bluff Preserve and say "Good morning!" to some of our beautiful natives 🌿

▪︎ Pale Spiked Lobelia (Lobelia Spicata)
- Don't miss it before the other veggitation grows twice its hight! This delicate wildflower only grows to about two feet tall 🪻

▪︎ Hoary Puccoon (Lithospermum Canescens)
- This fuzzy leaved little flower usually only blooms from April to june 🏵

▪︎ American Spikenard (Aralia Racemosa)
- The roots of Spikenard were historically used by native Americans as an ingredient is sarsaparilla 🍺

▪︎ Poke Milkweed (Asclepias Exaltata)
- A primary host plant to the monarch butterfly, the Poke Milkweed plant is unique because it is a shade lover! It provides great habitat for our pollinators deeper in the tree line 🦋 🐝

Wisconsin is home to many moths that would prefer not to be seen. Here is a good example of one; a Gray Porcelain moth (Protoboarmia porcelaria).

This creature is a geometer moth species and their little inchworms overwinter right on bark and branches! Nuthatches and chickadees will eat these little frozen larvae in winter as well.

Try to spot them! 🐛🔍

The interns are back in Kettle Moraine! We're starting off this year with cleaning up a bit of the trail on Peterson Island Woods Preserve. Needless to say, it was quite a bit of thistle!🧤
