Its Georgia Day! The Peach state is where half of all U.S. peanuts are grown and it's the birthplace of Coca-Cola! Savannah is where the Girl Scouts of America was founded, and the only county in Georgia named after a woman is Hart County, named for Nancy Hart, a patriot and warrior in the fight against the British during the Revolutionary War.
We want to wish our brothers and sisters in the VFW Auxiliary Department of Georgia a Happy Georgia Day! 🍑

Today is Buffalo Soldier Day, did you know we owe much of our California history to these brave men?

Created by an Act of Congress following the Civil War, the six all-Black units were eventually consolidated into four legendary regiments: the 9th and 10th Cavalry, and the 24th and 25th Infantry. According to historical lore, Native American tribes coined the term "Buffalo Soldiers". They gave the moniker because the soldiers' dark, curly hair resembled the fur of the revered buffalo, and their fierce, relentless fighting style reminded them of the animal. The soldiers embraced the name as a badge of honor. They patrolled the remote frontier, mapped vast, unexplored territories, built roads, and protected settlers and stagecoach during the countries booming western expansion. Between 1891 and 1913, long before the National Park Service was established, Buffalo Soldiers served as some of the country's first national park rangers, protecting Sequoia and Yosemite from poachers and loggers. Beyond the American frontier, these regiments fought with distinction in the Spanish-American War (including the famous charge up San Juan Hill), the Philippine-American War, and both World Wars.

Despite serving with exceptional courage, the Buffalo Soldiers faced systemic racism at home and were routinely denied proper recognition. Over the course of the Indian Wars, 18 African American enlisted men were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for their bravery.

The all-Black units remained segregated until 1948, when President Harry S. Truman signed an executive order ending segregation in the U.S. military. Their legacy lives on in historical archives and popular culture, most notably memorialized in Bob Marley's reggae classic "Buffalo Soldier". You can explore more of their decorated history and preserved sites through the U.S. National Park Service or the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

We have asked our Past Department Presidents some questions to get to know them better, here is what PDP Marilyn Leisure had to say...

✨What is your favorite memory from your year?
One of my favorite memories during my year as President was the incredible honor of visiting all the Districts throughout California. Meeting Auxiliary members behind the scenes, the ones who work tirelessly, plan events, support their communities, and often do not have the opportunity to attend conventions—was truly inspiring.
It was a privilege to put names to faces, hear their stories, and witness the dedication and passion that each Auxiliary brings to our mission. Their commitment reminded me that the strength of our organization comes from the many members who quietly give their time, talents, and hearts to serve.
Another unforgettable memory was the Commanders and Presidents Reception held at the Pacific Palms Conference Resort in Industry Hills. The evening was elegant, the food was wonderful, and the room was filled with warmth, friendship, and love. Seeing so many members come together made the event truly special. It was a beautiful evening that reflected the spirit of our organization—camaraderie, dedication, and a shared commitment to supporting our veterans and
their families. I will always cherish the memories and the incredible people I had the honor of meeting throughout that year.

✨What advice would you like to give to current and future leaders in our organization?
Leadership is not about titles or recognition—it is about service. Always remember why you accepted the responsibility: to make a positive difference for our veterans, their families, our members, and our community. Lead with integrity, compassion and respect. Listen more than you speak. Never try to do everything yourself. Build strong teams by encouraging others to become involved. Learn your Bylaws, be prepared and stay organization and communicate often.

We thank Marilyn for her years of dedication and Mentorship to the Department of California!
