💙 MY WHY WEDNESDAY: Meet Kent Pivonka! 💙

Some volunteers make a difference for a season. Others dedicate years to serving their community. Kent Pivonka has been part of the Elk Grove Food Bank family for more than 15 years! 👏

Kent volunteers on Tuesdays and Fridays, and his reason for getting involved was straightforward: After retiring, he wanted to give back to his community.

More than 15 years later, he's still showing up!

When we asked Kent what keeps him coming back, he shared that he enjoys the people, both fellow volunteers and the clients we serve, and the opportunity to help feed those in need.

And his favorite part of volunteering?

💬 "Being with positive people."

❤️ Kent, thank you for your incredible commitment to our community! Fifteen-plus years of service represents countless acts of kindness, friendships, and lives touched. We're fortunate to have you on our team!

💙 MY WHY WEDNESDAY: Meet Lillian Zimmerle! 💙

After 27 years with Bel Air Markets and Raley's Corporation, Lillian Zimmerle was ready for retirement—but she wasn't ready to stop making a difference! ❤️

Lillian wanted to find something meaningful to do with her time, and her inspiration came from a familiar source.

During her years with Raley's, she learned about the company's Food for Families program, which supports local food banks. Seeing that commitment to helping families in need inspired her to become a volunteer herself.

In September 2019, Lillian joined the Elk Grove Food Bank family, and she's been a dedicated member of our team ever since!

Today, Lillian volunteers in our Clothes Closet on Tuesdays and helps in the warehouse on Wednesdays, preparing bread, pastries, and lending a hand wherever she's needed.

When we asked what keeps her coming back, Lillian shared:

💬 "I love helping and interacting with our clients. I have also enjoyed making lasting friendships with the other volunteers and staff."

But her answer to our favorite question—What's your WHY?—really captures what volunteering means to her.

💬 "It gives me a sense of having a greater purpose in life."

That's what My Why Wednesday is all about! 💙

❤️ Lillian, thank you for turning your desire to give back into years of meaningful service. Your dedication, generosity, and willingness to help wherever needed make such a difference. We're grateful you're part of our Food Bank family!

💙✨ INTRODUCING MY WHY WEDNESDAY! ✨💙

Every volunteer has a story. Every act of kindness has a purpose. And behind every helping hand is a reason WHY. ❤️

At the Elk Grove Food Bank, we're fortunate to have an extraordinary group of volunteers who show up day after day, giving their time, energy, and hearts to help our neighbors in need.

But have you ever wondered what inspires them to volunteer? What keeps them coming back? Or what they love most about being part of our Food Bank family?

We're about to share their stories!

We're excited to introduce My Why Wednesday, a new weekly feature celebrating the incredible people who make our mission possible.

Each Wednesday, we'll introduce you to some of our amazing volunteers, share a little about what they do, and, most importantly, let them tell you WHY they do it.

Some have been with us for decades. Others are just beginning their volunteer journeys. Each has a unique story, but they all share something special: a heart for helping others. 💕

We hope their stories will make you smile, inspire you, and perhaps even encourage you to discover your own WHY!

💙 Join us every Wednesday starting tomorrow as we celebrate the people behind the mission. Because at the Elk Grove Food Bank, our volunteers don't just make a difference. They ARE the difference!

🪔❤️ A Celebration of Light, Love, and Generosity! ❤️🪔

What a beautiful reminder that the brightest light comes from the kindness we share with others! ✨

Elk Grove Food Bank Services extends our deepest and most heartfelt gratitude to the Sanatan Sports and Cultural Association for their incredibly generous donation, presented during yesterday's Diwali Festival!

Diwali is a celebration of light, hope, and the triumph of good over darkness. We can think of no more meaningful way to honor that spirit than through an act of generosity that will bring hope, comfort, and nourishment to neighbors facing food insecurity.

❤️ Every donation represents more than food on a table. It represents a family feeling supported, a senior knowing they haven't been forgotten, and a community coming together to remind those facing difficult times that they are not alone.

We were honored to have Food Bank Board members Dr. Ashu Mishra, Board Chair Dr. Suman Singha, Dhaval Shah, and Larry Sahota on hand to receive this wonderful gift during the festivities.

To everyone at the Sanatan Sports and Cultural Association, thank you for sharing not only your generosity, but also the beautiful spirit of compassion, unity, and service that makes our community so special.

Your kindness truly lights the way for others. 🪔💛

From all of us at Elk Grove Food Bank Services, thank you, and Happy Diwali! May the light of this special celebration continue to shine throughout our community!
