The Bible Is the Word of God

There is no question that the Bible claims to be the Word of God. “The Bible is the word of God,” writes Christian theologian H. D. McDonald. “Such is the verdict to which our considerations have led us. And this verdict has the certain witness and warrant of the Bible itself.”

In fact, over two thousand times in the Old Testament alone, from the beginning (Genesis 1:3) to the end (Malachi 4:3), the assertion is made that God Himself spoke what is written within its pages (cf. Exodus 24:4; Deuteronomy 4:2; 2 Samuel 23:2; Psalm 119:89; Jeremiah 26:2).

This theme continues into the New Testament, where the phrase “the word of God” occurs over forty times (cf. Luke 11:28; Hebrews 4:12). Without apology or qualification, the Bible declares that it was written by men under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit (2 Timothy 3:16–17; 2 Peter 1:21), making it the Word of God (cf. 1 Thessalonians 2:13; 2 Peter 1:16–21; 1 John 4:6).

It further claims that its message is true because its divine author is incapable of falsehood (John 17:17; cf. Titus 1:2; Hebrews 6:18). “In effect, God signed every page of the Bible,” writes pastor Erwin Lutzer. “We have every reason to believe that His signature was not forged. God has spoken and He has told us so.”

THE WAY I DRAW CLOSER TO GOD

I’ve learned that I don’t draw closer to God by simply trying harder to be a better Christian. I draw closer by reminding myself every single day of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

I need to remind myself that I am a sinner who cannot save myself.

I need to remind myself that Jesus lived the perfect life I could never live, died the death I deserved, and rose again in victory.

I need to remind myself that my standing before God is not based on my performance, but on Christ’s finished work.

The Gospel humbles me.

The Gospel gives me hope.

The Gospel exposes my sin.

The Gospel reminds me of God’s grace.

The Gospel gives me a reason to worship.

And the Gospel sends me back into the world to tell others about Jesus.

I don’t just need the Gospel to become a Christian. I need the Gospel every day to live as a Christian.

So today, I’m preaching the Gospel to myself again: Christ died for sinners. Christ rose from the grave. Christ is my righteousness. Christ is my hope. Christ is my life.

As Paul said: “For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.” 1 Corinthians 2:2 ESV

Preach the Gospel to yourself daily.

Then go share that Gospel with someone else.

Pray for boldness, wisdom, open doors, and hearts ready to hear the truth of Christ. 🙏

God Is Always Watching

Today’s devotional from J.C. Ryle reminded me of a simple but powerful truth from Jeremiah 23:24:

“Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD.”

God’s presence should shape how we live.

1. It calls us to humility.
God sees what others cannot see. People may see our outward appearance, but God sees our hearts.

2. It restrains us from sin.
There is never a moment when we are outside the sight of God. Remembering that He is always near should cause us to pause before choosing sin.

3. It motivates us toward holiness.
If we truly understand that we live continually before God, we should desire to please Him in our thoughts, words, and actions.

Ryle’s reminder is convicting: we are never alone, never unseen, and never outside God’s presence… and never forget, “…and be sure your sin will find you out.” (Num 32:23)

So today, let’s live coram Deo, before the face of God.

“The LORD looketh on the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7)
