Some Sustainable T or C members are putting together a water sub-committee. What kind of changes can we be promoting on individual & city levels? Who has extra gutters &/or rain barrels? What grants are available to small poor rural towns for water projects? How do we get our city to incorporate GSI (green stormwater infrastructure) into roads projects? Interested in taking part? So, there have been rumors that some tech companies are looking at Sierra Co. for a data center. Suspicious activity is definitely happening farther out in the desert that indicates truth to these rumors.
There is a county commission meeting happening Tuesday, June 23rd at 10am (3m public comment rule) & a city commission meeting taking place on Wednesday, June 24th 4 pm (3m public comment rule) where we hope to preemptively let the county commissioners know our stance. I suggest mention of a moratorium (temporary prohibition of an activity) on the permitting or feasibility studies of data centers being placed within county & city limits.

Data Centers like Santa Teresa’s Project Jupiter are estimated to consume one million gallons of water per day (Office of the State Engineer, NM), much higher than the 20,000 gallons/ day first presented to the approving committee. It is also projected to emit 10 million tons of CO2 per year, more than ABQ & Las Cruces combined.

That project is just one of many going up in our country. A facility larger than manhattan is slated for Utah. The long term health & environmental effects on these projects is unknown. Why steam forward so quickly? For economic development?

Content creators around the state were contacted to promote project Jupiter under the guise of economic development. Temporary jobs & promised income are not enough to convince me to allow the destruction of our ecosystem.

We are in the middle of a 20+ year drought. Elephant Butte Lake is projected to be down to 2% holding capacity by August. Let’s not allow what little water & limited resources we have to be used for untrustworthy purposes.

Contamination is one of the leading issues surrounding recycling. When you throw one tin can or water bottle, it spoils the lot. If you throw cereal boxes in with the corrugated cardboard in the blue bins, someone has to take it out, or again, it ruins the lot. It’s a few extra steps, but worth the effort to manage your own waste more effectively.
