Colleagues, I would like to share two events that I hope we can work together to make possible.
THE GLOBAL POLITICS OF DRUGS. LA POLÍTICA GLOBAL DE LAS DR**AS.
1. A two-day symposium on Saturday, August 1, and Sunday, August 2, from 9:00 am to 4:00 p.m. at Eastside Cafe, 5469 Huntington Drive N, Los Angeles, CA 90032.
Keynote/Planteamiento: !DIGA NO A LA GUERRA CONTRA LAS DR**AS!
Profesor Eduardo Correa, Universidad Autónoma de la Ciudad de México.
Researcher in topics such as narcotrafficking in Mexico and Latin America, and Popular Education and participatory action research.
And collaboration via Zoom with activists and academics invited from Mexico, Colombia, Honduras, Bolivia, and Peru.
2. With the rise of the United States as the global hegemon since the late 19th century, the Colossus of the North has taken on the role of former colonial powers in the international drug trade, resulting in devastating effects both nationally and internationally. Finding solutions or responses requires an analysis that begins with a historically grounded, in-depth investigation of the context, dynamics, and key players.
Plans for the Fall
For the fall semester, we propose continuing Semillero Norte by bringing a trio of discussants to sustain this topic. We hope to organize university presentations as we have done in the past. We suggest dates in late September or October, depending on speaker availability. N.B. Since Eduardo Correa will be here for a few days after the 8/1 and 8/2 symposium, we would like to see if we can arrange campus presentations. We understand that there are a few classes offered and limited funds for honoraria during the summer, so these presentations will serve as free previews of upcoming fall events. In addition to Eduardo, the fall schedule will include Adrian Ramirez Lopez, a Mexican human rights activist and leader, and Arturo de Dios Palma, an independent journalist whose work has appeared in publications such as La Jornada and other media outlets. As in the past, I hope you will provide letters of invitation for these individuals, and I will send a sample letter once I have their addresses.
