🦯 Recognizing White Cane Day in Edinburg

Yesterday, the Edinburg Lions Club was honored to present the White Cane Day Proclamation to the City of Edinburg at City Hall.

White Cane Day is an opportunity to recognize the independence, mobility, and confidence that the white cane provides to individuals who are blind or visually impaired and to remind our community of the importance of accessibility and awareness.

And we decided to make the proclamation a little more personal…

We challenged Mayor Ochoa to put himself in someone else’s shoes or, in this case, to navigate City Hall without being able to see. Mayor Ochoa was blindfolded, given a white cane, and challenged to navigate the courtroom using the cane and his other senses for guidance.

What may seem like a familiar and simple walk can become a completely different experience when you can’t see what is in front of you.

It was a great opportunity to bring a little awareness, a little perspective, and maybe even a few laughs while highlighting the important work behind White Cane Day.

Thank you, Mayor Ochoa and the City of Edinburg, for helping the Edinburg Lions Club recognize this important day and for taking on the challenge!
