In den meetings the third week of September, the Lion/Tiger den discussed knights' codes of conduct, designed their own shields of cardboard, built Duplo castles, and did some "jousting" among themselves. The Wolf/Bear den discussed how technology can make our lives better, and made some Rice Krispie treats! The Webelos/AOL den, meanwhile, designed shelters out of Lincoln logs, practiced knot tying, and designed paper airplanes.

In mid-September den meetings, the Lion/Tiger den identified foods belonging in the different food groups, practiced hand washing, and discussed personal fitness. Meanwhile, the Wolf/Bear den went on a walk discovering natural resources, talked about how they are used (such as water!), and built an in-home composter out of 2 liter bottles. Lastly, the Webelos/AOL den discussed the connections between early humans and nature in different parts of the world, experimented with sparklers and learned about the chemistry involved, and conducted a brief scavenger hunt.

In mid-September, Pack 23 took a fun and educational trip to the Allegheny County Sanitary Authority (ALCOSAN). There, the Scouts went magnet fishing, drove a robot that detects clogs, looked at micro-organisms under a microscope, learned about lab safety, and took a tour of the water treatment plant. A great day was had by all!

In den meetings at the beginning of September, the Webelos/AOL den reviewed the Scout Oath and talked about what goes into making a person physically strong. As part of that, they played physically active games for most of the meeting and finished off with some relaxation exercises. Meanwhile, the Tigers, Wolves, and Bears talked about the Scout Oath and Law, practiced the Scout handshake, and did their best! The younger den also brainstormed and drew different symbols of our country, and finished off the meeting with a relay race.

At Pack 23's first den meetings of the new year, the Webelos/AOL den came up with a code of conduct, interviewed and introduced one another to the group, and discussed the meaning of the Scout oath and law. Meanwhile, the younger Scouts talked about their hopes for the new year, and built and tested popsicle stick bridges. Everyone also enjoyed a vigorous game of tag!

This past July, Pack 23 headed back to Camp Independence at BSA's Heritage Reservation in Farmington, PA. At camp, the scouts had a great time swimming, canoeing, stargazing, shooting bb guns, identifying animal tracks, playing chess, playing ga-ga ball, and roasting marshmallows over a campfire, among other activities.

On the first Saturday in June, Cub Scout Pack 23 held its annual Blue and Gold ceremony to celebrate all of the wonderful things Pack 23's scouts have accomplished this year. After a delicious potluck and a slide show, the scouts received well-earned awards and crossed over to their new ranks. Congratulations to all!

In Pack 23's last regular den meetings of the academic year, Scouts gathered together to look at the new memorial in Memorial Park to soldiers from Edgewood who made the ultimate sacrifice, in conflicts since WWII. The Scouts discussed the meaning of Memorial Day, and how we remember ones we've lost. Afterward, the respective dens played a series of relay and dodgeball games.
