Today was an incredible Sandwich Saturday! We came together to support our homeless neighbors and food-insecure families, and the energy was unmatched.
Before we hit the streets, we circled up. I shared my personal story, the trials and tribulations of growing up in Chicago and being homeless myself, and how those struggles fueled the vision for We Rise Above the Streets.
I also ran a quick workshop for our volunteers on the power of dignity: keeping eye contact, smiling, using positive body language, and serving with pure kindness.

A massive THANK YOU to all the amazing volunteers who showed up with kind hearts! Together, we hand-crafted over 300 sack lunches and sandwiches, each packed with love and an inspirational message. Thanks to your hard work and our donors, we didn't just pass out food today. We distributed: ​Over 300 sandwiches, sack lunches, desserts, and hot meals. ​Brand new sneakers and socks for men, women, and children, ​Women's and children's clothing, ​Hygiene products, ​Children's toys and teddy bears, ​Gift cards for families in need.

Today, a family came to us feeling deeply discouraged and heartbroken, not knowing where their next meal would come from or how they would clothe their children. Our volunteers surrounded them with love and respect. By the end, the parents told us our volunteers completely brightened their day, and the children said they had one of the best times of their lives. Before we parted ways, our beautiful volunteer family circled up one last time. I looked around at everyone and expressed my deepest gratitude. I wanted to make sure everyone knew just how much I truly love them and appreciate their dedication. ​No matter what race or religion, what background, what culture, —We Are One. When we come together, we can make this world a better place!

Rest tonight, because tomorrow is a brighter day. Keep a clean heart and never stop being a blessing to the people around you. True success comes when you use your gifts to help others. Keep a positive mindset, keep putting in the heavy lifting, and stay focused. Continue to be a gift to those in need. Helping others is the ultimate foundation for real success. I know what it’s like to be in the dark. I remember the cold nights, the hunger, and the heavy struggle of being homeless on the streets. But God had a plan for my pain. Today, I stand as living proof that your past does not dictate your future. True success didn't come when I finally made it out, it came when I reached back to pull others up with me. I changed my life so I could help change the world, one heart at a time. No matter where you are tonight, don't give up. If I can rise above it, so can you. Tomorrow Saturday, We Rise Above the Streets Recovery Outreach Inc. is bringing together people from every walk of life to destroy hardship with love. We aren't just feeding bodies; we are lifting souls. Here is how we are making a difference tomorrow. We are packing up sandwiches and sack lunches, serving hot meals, and going out into the streets. Our mission is to look people in the eyes, share real conversations, and spread unconditional compassion.
A Space for the Youth at Lincoln Middle School: In our art side-room, children will be creating inspirational messages to pack inside the meals, pouring their hearts into every note for the homeless and food insecurity families household. We are distributing men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing, toys, new shoes, new socks, baby desserts, hygiene products, household items, and so much more. We need your hands, your heart, and your presence to make this world a better place.
🔴 When: Tomorrow, Saturday. The event starts at 10:00 a.m., but please arrive by 9:30 a.m. This gives people enough time to get settled before everything begins.

It was an honor leading workshops and classes at the Syracuse University College of Law. I spoke with these future lawyers about the true power of charity and the vital importance of staying grounded in kindness after they graduate, get their degrees, and join law firms.
​I shared my own journey—from the raw struggles of being homeless to the success stories of today—as a reminder to never take life for granted, because everything can disappear in a quickness. I challenged them to take the lessons they learned from my experiences and always attach their legal careers to community service. Students also joined us for Sandwich Saturday, collecting an abundance of men's, women's, and children's new socks and hygiene items for the organization. ​The people we serve are incredibly grateful, and it is a powerful reminder of how much of a footprint kindness can leave in our world. Thank you to the students and faculty for your passion and engagement. Together, we keep lifting others up!

The Mission Never Stops: Join Us This Saturday!

Every single week, families and individuals in our community struggling with homelessness and food insecurity rely on us. We need your support to keep going!
🚚 A Note on Our Transportation
Right now, our truck is breaking down on us. However, we remain incredibly hopeful that someone will donate a truck or that we will have a fundraiser soon to secure a new vehicle. The work is too important to stop!
🥪 Items Needed This Week (Drop-Offs Welcome!)
We are always accepting donations at our location. Right now, we urgently need:
Hygiene Products: Both travel-size and full-size hygiene items and toilet tissue.
Clothing: Gently used clothes (in great condition no stains or holes) and brand-new socks and underwear.
Sandwich Making: Sliced turkey meat, cheese, granola bars, individual chip bags, brown paper bags, and sandwich bags.

Our impact is growing, and love knows no boundaries! While we proudly serve a massive crowd right here in the city of Syracuse, our reach has expanded far beyond. We now have individuals and families traveling all the way from Utica, Cortland, Fulton and other surrounding counties to receive help. We are incredibly grateful to have the resources to support every single person making these long journeys. I truly believe people travel this far because of the genuine kindness, dignity, and love we share with everyone who comes for help and services at "Sandwich Saturday" and walks through our office doors.
