RHODE ISLAND LAWMAKERS PASS TEAMSTER-SUPPORTED WAREHOUSE WORKER PROTECTION ACT

Teamsters are celebrating the passage of S2504A/H7364A, the Rhode Island Warehouse Worker Protection Act, out of the General Assembly. The legislation will prevent companies like Amazon from abusing their workforce by regulating the use and disclosure of warehouse quotas.

“Amazon and other bad actors who make up the worst employers in our state have been wreaking havoc on workers’ livelihoods and physical well-being for far too long, but we’re putting a stop to in Rhode Island,” said Matt Taibi, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 251 in East Providence.

Governor Dan McKee has already said he will sign the bill into law. Rhode Island will become the seventh state to enact the Warehouse Worker Protection Act, following California, Minnesota, New York, Oregon, Washington, and most recently Connecticut.

“Far too many people who work in warehousing go to work every day and put themselves in harm’s way because of strain or exhaustion, and even then, are told they’re still not abiding by an unknown production standard,” Taibi said. “By working with our allies in the legislature, particularly Rep. Evan Shanley and Senate Majority Leader Frank Ciccone, we’ve leveled the playing field by increasing something that isn’t measured enough: corporate accountability.”

In addition to general raises this year under our national master agreement, UPS Teamsters will receive higher cost-of-living (COLA) wage increases on Aug. 1, per Article 33 of the contract that protects Teamsters against rising inflation.

The 2026 COLA allowances of $0.22 per hour and 0.55 cents per mile for UPS Teamsters will be added to this year’s negotiated $1 per hour wage increases ratified in the 2023-2028 UPS Teamsters National Master Agreement. They will be added to scheduled raises as well for all mileage paid members, pushing single rate wage increases to 2.84 cents per miles, double rate to 2.89 cents per mile, and triple rate to 2.94 cents per mile.

“The historic general wage increases secured in the first year of our current national master agreement pulled UPS Teamsters significantly ahead of inflation, and the latest COLA increases will continue to give our members a strong buffer against the rising cost of living,” said Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien. “The robust COLA language that UPS Teamsters negotiated and ratified will keep drivers and warehouse workers protected for the life of the contract. With another strong wage increase of $2.25 per hour still to come for all UPS Teamsters next year, we are reminded of the power of collective bargaining and the urgency to continue to enforce every article of our record-setting agreement at UPS."

The Teamsters Package Division is notifying all UPS locals of the COLA allowances nationwide.

Workers have the right to a collective bargaining agreement after they vote to form their union. Current labor law is full of loopholes that employers exploit to drag out negotiations for years. On average, American workers are forced to wait 458 days to secure a first union contract.

Teamsters and millions of workers across the country are done waiting. Real reform is needed now. Last month, by building a bipartisan coalition, the Teamsters Union worked with 218 members of Congress to sign a discharge petition, bypassing House leadership to bring the Faster Labor Contracts Act to the floor for a vote.

The vote in Congress is now upon us. Tell your member of Congress to “VOTE YES” and pass the Faster Labor Contracts Act:
