Hi Everyone!
Welcome to a series by the East Brunswick Sustainability Task Force, The Pick! The Pick will be a monthly seasonal fresh product guide for the town, highlighting the top harvests from the gardenstate during the month, ready for you to pick! Whether that is at a nearby farm or a local farmers market.
July’s Picks:
•Vine Ripened Tomatoes
A true summer tomato, left on the vine to ripen naturally in the sun rather than picked green and forced to color later. July is when Jersey tomatoes hit their peak, which is exactly why the state calls itself the Garden State!
•Blueberries
New Jersey blueberries are basically a state treasure — and July is prime picking time. Farms are hosting picking events all over.
•Peaches
July is one of the best months to find Jersey peaches at their peak.
•Sweet Corn
A summer staple across New Jersey farms, sweet corn is harvested at its peak sugar content in mid-to-late summer, before the kernels have a chance to starch up. Boil it, grill it, butter it up.
•Eggplant
A warm-season vegetable (technically a fruit) that thrives in July’s heat, eggplant comes in that signature deep purple color, though it also grows in white, green, and striped varieties.
•Bell Peppers
This versatile fruit reach peak ripeness and sweetness in mid-to-late summer as they shift from green to red, orange, or yellow.
•Cucumbers
A warm-weather crop that grows quickly on the vine, cucumbers are mostly water, which is part of why they’re such a popular summer harvest across New Jersey farms.
