NJ STATE PBA BLASTS THE POLITICS BEHIND POLICE FURLOUGHS

New Jersey State PBA President Peter Andreyev addressed the council during public comment, speaking on behalf of PBA Local 75.

"Ten Edison police officers have been furloughed," Andreyev said. "We are now being told that the number could grow substantially if this budget is not passed. These are not unnecessary positions or expendable employees. They are police officers hired and trained and assigned to protect the residents of Edison."

"A police department cannot be turned on and off like a light switch," Andreyev said. "Calls for service will continue, emergencies will continue, crime will not wait for the council to resolve its differences."

Andreyev said the State PBA asked the council to approve funding to return all furloughed officers to duty, provide the local union with complete information on any proposed additional furloughs, and meet promptly with the local to negotiate the effects of any staffing actions.

"No family should be left wondering whether a paycheck is coming, and no Edison resident should have to wonder whether enough officers will be available to answer their 911 emergency call," Andreyev said.

The Edison Town Council passed the temporary emergency appropriations on Thursday night restoring the officers to work.

The State PBA is urging the council to vote for the regular 2026 municipal budget scheduled for the next regular council meeting, which will be held on Aug. 3.

We are extremely proud of East Brunswick PBA Local 145 members Patrolman Michael Miszkiewicz and Patrolman Joseph Whalen, who were recognized for their extraordinary courage and dedication during a rescue at Farrington Lake.

On April 10, 2026, Officers Miszkiewicz and Whalen responded to a mental health crisis call and entered the icy waters to rescue an individual in danger, putting their own safety at risk to protect a member of the community.

Their actions during this incident demonstrated exceptional courage, selflessness, and an unwavering commitment to protecting others. Officers Miszkiewicz and Whalen’s actions exemplify the professionalism and dedication that define our profession.

We congratulate Patrolmen Miszkiewicz and Whalen on this well-deserved recognition and thank them for their professionalism, courage, and dedication to the residents of East Brunswick. We are honored to call them our brothers.

Yesterday officers of the East Brunswick Police Department, members of PBA Local 145, responded to the report of an adult male possibly drowning in Dallenbach Lake. The responding officers immediately, and without hesitation, entered the lake in an attempt to locate and rescue the man in distress. While the rescue attempt was tragically unsuccessful, we would like to recognize these officers for their bravery and dauntless actions as they placed themselves in harms way attempting to preserve human life. We would also like to recognize and thank all responding agencies who assisted on this tragic incident.

****East Brunswick Police Investigating Drowning at Dallenbach Lake****

The East Brunswick Police Department is investigating the drowning of a 59-year-old man that occurred at Dallenbach Lake.

On July 15, 2026, at approximately 3:34 PM, the East Brunswick Police Department received a report of a man who had been swimming in Dallenbach Lake (380 Dunhams Corner Road) and had gone underwater without resurfacing.

A large-scale emergency response was immediately initiated. The following agencies responded to assist in the search and rescue effort:
- East Brunswick Police Department
- East Brunswick Office of Emergency Management (OEM)
- East Brunswick Fire Department (all three fire districts)
- Perth Amboy Police and Fire Dive Team
- New Jersey State Police Aviation Unit
- New Jersey State Police Marine Unit
- RWJBarnabas Health Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS)

After an extensive search of the lake, members of the Perth Amboy Police and Fire Dive Team located the man and removed him from the water. RWJBarnabas Health BLS and ALS personnel immediately initiated lifesaving measures and transported him to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

The identity of the individual is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. No further identifying information will be released at this time.

The incident remains under investigation by the East Brunswick Police Department Investigative Division. At this time, there is no indication of foul play.

The East Brunswick Police Department is asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has information that may assist investigators to contact the East Brunswick Police Department Investigative Division at 732-390-6990. Individuals may also submit anonymous information through the Department's Confidential Tip Line at 732-4EBTIPS.

Chief Frank LoSacco commended the efforts of everyone involved in the response.

"This was an incredibly challenging and heartbreaking incident. I want to express my sincere gratitude to every first responder who worked tirelessly throughout this operation. This response is a testament to the strong partnerships that exist among our law enforcement, fire service, EMS, and public safety agencies. Working together, these dedicated professionals brought an immense amount of expertise, resources, and commitment to this difficult operation.

On behalf of the East Brunswick Police Department, I extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time."

Today, members of the East Brunswick Police Department were happy to join Council President Dana Zimbicki and Township staff in celebrating National Hot Dog Day at the Municipal Complex.

Thank you to East Brunswick Recreation & Parks for organizing another great community event. We always appreciate the opportunity to connect with our residents, share a few smiles, and enjoy a hot dog together.

In light of recent incidents in nearby towns, We would like to acknowledge the many often overlooked aspects that inherently come with our job.

Whether working Patrol or Detective — the job hits hard. Broken sleep, back pain, chronic stress, PTSD, family strain, and sky-high su***de risk. These difficulties and circumstances are often overlooked or brushed off. East Brunswick Local 145 would like to acknowledge all the officers who do this job day in and day out as well as bring public awareness to these challenges.

Honor the badge. Protect your health. Break the silence.

****Township of East Brunswick Cancels July 4th Independence Day Celebration Due to Severe Weather Threat****

The Township of East Brunswick has made the difficult decision to cancel today's Independence Day Celebration, scheduled for Saturday, July 4, 2026, at the Community Arts Center, 721 Cranbury Road, due to the forecast of severe thunderstorms capable of producing lightning, damaging winds, and heavy rainfall during the scheduled hours of the event.

The forecasted weather is similar to the powerful storms that impacted East Brunswick last evening, causing significant damage throughout the township.

This was not an easy decision. We understand how much our residents look forward to celebrating Independence Day together as a community. However, the combination of the ongoing extreme heat and the high likelihood of severe thunderstorms is not something we are willing to gamble with. The safety of our residents, visitors, event staff, volunteers, and first responders must always come first.

The Township is currently working to identify and announce an alternate celebration date. The previously scheduled rain date of Sunday, July 5, 2026, is also expected to experience similar thunderstorm activity and is therefore no longer a viable option.

Township officials extend their sincere appreciation to the many employees, volunteers, public safety personnel, and community partners who spent months planning this year's celebration.

An event of this size is a tremendous undertaking, and we want to thank every member of our Recreation & Parks Department, Police Department, Office of Emergency Management, Department of Public Works, Fire Districts, EMS agencies, and all township employees who dedicated countless hours to preparing for today's festivities. Their commitment and hard work do not go unnoticed.

Residents should also be aware that crews continue to respond to storm damage from last night's severe weather. Downed trees and power lines remain in several areas of the township, and some residents are still experiencing power outages. Township officials remain in close communication with the utility companies to ensure restoration efforts continue as quickly and safely as possible.

In addition, a Heat Warning remains in effect until 8:00 p.m. EDT this evening. Residents are encouraged to limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and check on elderly neighbors and vulnerable family members.

For anyone needing relief from the heat or a place to charge mobile devices while power restoration efforts continue, the East Brunswick Police Department lobby is open and available as a cooling center.

The Township appreciates the public's patience, understanding, and cooperation as we continue responding to the impacts of last night's storms while preparing for additional severe weather.

Updates regarding a rescheduled Independence Day celebration will be announced as soon as they become available.
