SCAM ALERT: PLEASE SHARE
Please be aware of a donation scam targeting animal shelters and rescue organizations across the country. While we did not fall victim to this attempt, many organizations have reportedly been affected.
The person contacting us and other shelters used the name David Buchanan, which may be a stolen identity. The scam typically works like this: they offer to make a $2,000 donation, then send a check for $4,000 and urgently ask for the extra $2,000 to be returned immediately.
To gather information that could be helpful to law enforcement, I briefly continued the conversation and was able to obtain PayPal, Venmo, and Zelle, and wiring details after stating that the payments were not going through.
It is deeply upsetting that anyone would target organizations dedicated to caring for vulnerable animals. Shelters and rescues rely on community generosity, and fundraising is already difficult as veterinary and care costs continue to rise.
Please share this warning to help protect animal shelters and rescue organizations from this scam.
Taking resources from animals and the organizations trying to save them is unacceptable.
