In August 1863, Beatrix Potter’s parents married and a quilt that looked just like this one (made by Michele Hill in 2015-16) commemorated their marriage.

The quilt was made using hand-piecing, hand-applique, and hand-embroidery.

❤️ On this day in 1863, Beatrix's parents, Rupert William Potter and Helen Leech married at Hyde Unitarian Chapel, Gee Cross.

🖌 While Helen encouraged Beatrix's education and interests, it was her father, Rupert Potter, whose artistic talent left an especially lasting mark on his daughter. An accomplished amateur photographer and skilled artist, Rupert fostered a creative atmosphere at home, encouraging Beatrix to observe the world around her with a careful eye and to develop her remarkable talent for drawing.

📚 While Beatrix Potter became a literary icon, the influence of her parents played an important role in shaping the writer, artist, and conservationist she would become.

🛏 Inside the bedroom at Hill Top, you will spot a colourful ornate quilt on the bed. This is a modern reproduction of Helen and Rupert Potter’s marriage quilt. It combines their initials and the date of their marriage.

“The Freedom Quilting Bee was founded in 1966 and became a nationally recognized quilting cooperative that created economic opportunity for Black women in rural Alabama. Through partnerships with national retailers, the women of the cooperative generated income for their families while preserving an artistic tradition and advancing economic justice during the Civil Rights Movement.”

Quilting has historically (and currently) played an important role in so many American stories - it is wonderful to continue to learn about them and see the ways our craft is supported around the country!
