TSLW began in 1985 as a grassroots volunteer organization determined to wipe out adult illiteracy in this area. We were incorporated and established as a 501(c)(3) non-profit, Harnett County Literacy in 1985. After 30 year, our original mission still drives our board, staff, members, volunteers, and even our students. We provide FREE basic adult literacy, English as a Second Language (ESL) instruc

tion , math, citizenship classes, as well as teaching computer literacy and financial literacy. Our ultimate goal is to make adult students more educated and employable. Based on the philosophy of adult literacy pioneer Dr. Frank Laubach, we believe as he did in “each one teach one.” Volunteer tutors are matched one-to-one throughout Harnett, Johnston, and Sampson Counties with individual students at convenient times and locations. Satellite office spaces will soon become available within the Johnston County Library (Smithfield Library) and at the Sampson County Partnership for Children. Once Coordinators are hired to manage these counties, we will post each site’s address and available office hours.
