Cobblestone Springs

Cobblestone Springs Cobblestone Springs is a retreat center and hidden gem located in the Finger Lakes Region of rural Upstate New York.

Housed in a historic 1840s cobblestone mansion, it overlooks the beautiful Seneca Lake valley with horse drawn carriages passing often... After 30 years as a retreat center and gathering place, Cobblestone Springs has ceased operations. The lovingly restored building with surrounding property is currently for sale.

Talmudic Stories and Midrashim
Monday, May 6, 11 a.m. to noon, via Zoom

Jews have been called, “The People of the Book.” Our primary book, the Hebrew Bible (Tanach), is a source of inspiration and connection. The next book in the hierarchy, the Talmud, is a "vast compendium" of rabbinic wisdom that includes discussion of Jewish law and also stories -- stories that enhance and try to explain parts of Tanach (midrashim), and stories that deal with daily life in general.

We will closely study several Talmudic stories and see what both the rabbis of the talmudic era, and we of the present day, can learn from them.

The facilitator for these sessions is Leslie Schwartz, Ph.D. Coming from a liberal Jewish tradition, Leslie’s approach to ancient Jewish texts emphasizes her admiration of their ultimate goal – to make our own lives holy through study, questioning, awe, and gratitude.

Classics in Spirituality, Monday Dec 4 at 11 a.m. via Zoom. Email [email protected] for Zoom link!

Join us as scholar Christopher Wright reviews the most studied religious artifact in history, the Shroud of Turin. It’s been examined by representatives of Christianity and biblical scholars, but also by members of the scientific, medical, chemical, and forensic communities. Venerated for centuries as the actual burial shroud used to wrap the body of Jesus of Nazareth after his crucifixion, it is believed his bodily image is miraculously imprinted upon it.

New plants from this spring, now flowering in the pollinator gardens and elsewhere at Cobblestone Springs. We got these from Yates County Extension last spring as tiny seedlings, and they are thriving, much to the appreciation of local bees and others!

Freeing the Writer Within
Saturday, October 14, $50 per person

10 a. m. - 3 p.m. with Patricia Roth Schwartz, poet

This workshop is open to all, whether an experienced writer or just starting out. Through a series of fun but inspiring exercises, participants will explore how to bring imagery, symbolism, story-telling, and more into short pieces of prose and poetry. The techniques of guided imagery, visualization, and free writing will be used to bring out the creativity we all possess.

The group will meet from 10 am to 3 pm, with an hour-long lunch break. Bring your own lunch (refrigeration is available), or order from a local restaurant with excellent choices, including vegetarian and vegan options, at reasonable prices. Please bring writing materials. Dress for a short outdoor walk.

Patricia Roth Schwartz, poet, memoirist, fiction writer, playwright, and editor is new to Cobblestone Springs and excited to offer this exceptional class. She has taught college courses, written and published seven books, founded Finger Lakes Literary Guild, and been a member in numerous others. One of her greatest rewards was bringing poetry to inmates for 14 years!
