I used to think a hydrangea that had finished flowering was quietly asking for a haircut. Turns out, this is exactly the point in the season where a well-meaning gardener can make next year’s display rather… economical. There are only a few things worth doing now, and one of them is gloriously close to doing nothing at all. Another gives you free plants, which is the sort of gardening arithmetic I can support. But the little timing detail with the fading blooms is the bit most people miss.

If you love Geraniums!

No room to haul a dozen geranium pots inside this winter? You don’t need it.

Before frost hits, snip a few healthy stems and set them in jars of water on a sunny windowsill. That’s your whole collection, tucked into a corner of the kitchen instead of crowding every window in the house.

Come spring, those same cuttings head right back out to the garden, the window boxes, and the patio pots. Each one becomes a brand-new plant of the exact variety you grew this year, and you didn’t buy a single one. Do it every fall and you may never have to buy geraniums again.

Hydrangea Care

I see it every August. The big mopheads start turning a bit sepia, and folks immediately rush out with their secateurs to tidy things up. It's the most common advice you'll hear right now, but depending on the type of shrub sitting in your yard, that quick late-summer trim might just cost you every single flower next year. Over my three decades of gardening, I've learned that plants usually know what they're doing. Sometimes the smartest thing you can do for your garden is absolutely nothing. Before you make a cut you can't undo, there are a few entirely different things you should be doing with those fading blooms instead (including the exact right time to snip them if you want them to dry perfectly indoors). Put the pruners down, grab a cold drink, and let's talk about what happens next.
