Grasshopper Creek begins its journey in the Pioneer Mountains, flowing through the agricultural valley bottom and the dry, rocky canyon below Bannack Ghost Town, before it merges with the Beaverhead River downstream of Clark Canyon Dam. While beautiful and an important tributary to the Beaverhead River, it is not without its problems.

The Grasshopper is a major source of sediment for the Beaverhead, and with the dam, there aren't high spring flows and floods to clear out the sediment. Because of this, the Beaverhead Watershed Committee is pursuing projects to reduce erosion on the Grasshopper and the eventual sediment flowing into the Beaverhead. The current project will stabilize mine tailings along the creek and soften the structure with even more willows to improve stability and fish habitat. They’ve secured DNRC and FWP Future Fisheries funding for this project and will break ground this fall. Project partners include Bannack State Park, Montana DNRC, and Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Future Fisheries.
