🗓️🔔SAVE THE DATES!
Next month is almost here! We’ve got an exciting line up of late summer events ahead filled with paddling, camping, community, and time outside.

🚨As we gather outdoors, we’re also reminded that climate change is reshaping the places we love. We’ll be monitoring air quality related to the Canadian wildfires (and other hazards) and will keep everyone informed if any events need to be adjusted.

Bear with us as we put the finishing touches on *registration* and all the important details for all the events! As a small (but mighty 💪🏾) volunteer-led team, we appreciate your patience while we get everything ready.

For now, save these dates, tell your friends, and start getting ready, we can’t wait to see y’all outside. 🖤

We’re excited to share that we’re hiring for two part-time entry level positions!

A huge thank you to the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge for their continued support & belief in our work and helping make these positions possible after we unexpectedly lost the original funding due to DEI cuts by the Trump Administration.

We also want to be transparent that these are *temporary positions* (6 months). One of the biggest lessons we’ve taken away is the importance of building more sustainable funding streams. We’re actively working toward a future where Black to the Land can rely less on federal dollars and more on building sustainable funding for longer-term opportunities.

And to everyone who has been part of this journey, especially those who helped during the first ever round of hiring, thank you! We’re grateful for the chance to grow our capacity again, have learned a lot along the way, and can’t wait to work with some cool people.

Application is now open! Check out the graphic for details or visit [bit.ly/bttlcjobs], and help us spread the word by sharing with folks who may be a great fit.

Earlier this month, we trained 15 Water Safety Leaders who will help keep our community safe on the water all summer long!😮‍💨

These leaders have volunteered with us for the past several years and bring a wide range of paddling experience. Their dedication has helped us expand our programs and create more opportunities to get people safely out on the water; something that wouldn't be possible without them!

A huge thank you to Andrea Knepper, founder and former Executive Director of Chicago Adventure Therapy(CAT), for leading a training focused on water rescues, paddling skills, and boat maneuverability. The training helped our team build confidence and strengthen the skills needed to support safe, enjoyable paddling experiences.

This is just the beginning! We're excited to continue collaborating with CAT and to grow future trainings, water rescue practice days, paddling skills gatherings here in Detroit, and a stronger community of paddlers of color prepared to take on bigger waters and greater adventures.

If you have experience with water rescues, paddling, or outdoor leadership and want to get involved, send us a DM.

Get yourself a watercraft and tap in: we've got big plans ahead 🌊🛟🛶 let's go!
