Its been an interesting 24 hours…….
Literally minutes after posting our interest in reactivating the outreach team, families, and those struggling began reaching out.
Several team members hit the streets of Camden and Philadelphia (Kensington) to conduct a survey of the challenges ahead of us.
There were laughs, hugs and tears. We saw lots of familiar faces, and way too many new ones.
There were no words to describe it. Bodies everywhere. You did not know who was sleeping, who was passed out high and who was overdosing. Fire and EMS could not keep pace. We did see several college based outreach teams in Kensington. Camden? NOTHING!!!!!! A few service organizations now boarded up and chained shut. People bathing in trickling fire hydrants.
The streets were full of sadness, hopeless and despair. These are our friends, our neighbors and people’s children who are struggling!
In two hours, we located one missing person and put two others in touch with their families.
It was at this moment that Tom sent out a simple two-word text……. “We’re Back”.
What is next?
1. Fundraising, fundraising, fundraising. Those who know us know, every penny that goes in, usually two go back out
2. Effective immediately, almost every previous team member has offered to return in some capacity. Tom will assume his role as “Chief” and Kellie as “President”. New volunteer requests have began flooding in!
3. Letter of intent to services in each county we serve and Press Releases.
4. The team will he holding a strategy meeting shortly.
5. As always there will be posts issued regularly along with updates.
