Sadly, Irene deGrandpre, Roots & Wings’ founder, passed away last weekend. For our team, Irene has been—and will continue to be—a daily inspiration.

She leaves behind an extraordinary legacy of compassion, generosity, and foresight. She saw a need, and she addressed it. And as a result, hundreds of young people who have aged out of foster care in NJ have overcome hurdles that may have seemed insurmountable: remaining safely housed, gaining the skills necessary to earn a livable wage, and embarking on a path toward stability and financial independence.

It’s quite a legacy.

We will honor Irene by continuing the work she believed in so strongly.

What's one life skill you're grateful someone took the time to teach you?

Some of the most important lessons in life aren't the ones we learn in school. They're the ones someone takes the time to teach us, like how to stick to a budget, cook a meal, or change a tire. The ones we learn from a parent, a grandparent, or another trusted adult.

But for many young adults aging out of foster care, that kind of guidance hasn't always been there.

At Roots & Wings, we're helping fill that gap by providing life skills, mentorship, and a supportive community that empowers young adults to build confident, independent futures. Because everyone deserves someone to answer the questions, offer encouragement, and say, "You've got this."
