General information
Research proves daily physical activity raises self-esteem, develops peer relationships, enhances overall health and improves quality of life. Medical professionals, sports professionals and skaters have all suggested that ice skating is a beneficial physical activity for providing healthy exercise and enjoyment to people of all ages and abilities. A research study of more than 1,000 adults with disabilities showed that those participating in adaptive sports programs had higher employment rates, were happier, and enjoyed higher socialization than those not participating in adaptive sports. Adaptive Skating USA (ASU) brings value-added benefits to both individuals and the ice skating community more broadly. Principally, ASU benefits skating participants by creating access to a life-changing experience; and by providing sponsorships that offset individual costs such as program participation fees, rink costs and adaptive equipment. Additionally, ASU benefits the ice skating community by exposing ice skating to a wider, more diverse audience, by increasing its member base to be more inclusive of individuals with disabilities, and by facilitating the sharing and donation of new and used equipment.
