Winter Safety Tips for Dogs 🐾❄️
As the temperature drops, remember that our dogs need a little extra care to stay safe and comfortable through the winter months. Here’s what every pet parent should keep in mind:
1. Keep walks short and sweet.
If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for your dog. Frostbite can happen quickly on paws, ears, and tails. Choose shorter walks more often instead of long outings, and stick to cleared sidewalks whenever possible.
2. Protect those paws.
Salt and ice melt can irritate paw pads or make them crack. Use dog booties if your pup tolerates them, or apply a paw balm before and after walks. Always wipe paws when you get home to remove salt and chemicals.
3. Don’t leave dogs outside unattended.
Even breeds that love snow can get hypothermia. Never leave your dog outside for long periods, especially at night.
4. Dress for the weather.
Short-haired or small dogs lose body heat quickly. A properly fitted sweater or jacket isn’t just cute—it’s protection.
5. Watch for antifreeze.
It tastes sweet to dogs but is deadly. Keep it out of reach and clean up any spills immediately.
6. Feed wisely.
Dogs burn more calories staying warm. Active dogs may need a bit more food, but indoor dogs usually don’t—so adjust as needed to maintain a healthy weight.
7. Create a cozy retreat.
Make sure your dog’s bed is warm, dry, and away from drafts or cold floors. A blanket or raised bed helps too.
Let’s keep our dogs safe, warm, and happy all winter long. ❤️🐶
