Yesterday (March 17, 2026) Dr. Deegan gave a talk at the Paonia Senior Center for North Fork Senior Connections. During it he discussed a blood test for Tau (one of the markers for Alzheimer's). This test rules out Alzheimer's as a cause for someone who has had memory or other issues.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the Elecsys pTau181 blood test. It’s the first test primary care doctors can use to help rule out

Dr. Jess F. Deegan II was watching a YouTube on "Dementia Careblazers" by Dr. Natalie. She made a great statement, noting that Dementia is not a disease of old age, but one of middle age that we see the effects of in old age. Changes in the brain have been occurring for years!

Welcome to another week in the Dementia Universe:

This week and the last can be particular problematic, given that often the person with Dementia does not know that it is cold. Their body may react as if cold, shivering for example, but the brain will not acknowledge the fact. This makes the person susceptible to hypothermia. If you have someone who wanders, this can be even more problematic. There are things that can be done! Door Locks high, double keyed deadbolts, door alarms, floor mat alarms, etc. What works best for you?

Want to discuss this more?

Join us at one of two meetings this week. The first is in Hotchkiss at the town hall, beginning at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday (2nd and 4th Weds.). The second is Thursday at CROSSROADS Assisted Living, also at 1:30. Yes, the flu outbreak has subsided and we are back in the Activity’s Room.

ASEDD Weekly News: Jan. 19, 2026
CareGiver:
Again, this message was delayed due to the flu situation at Crossroads. We are currently asked to meet at another location. Thus, the Delta Group is meeting at the Delta Hospital in Classroom B. The Wednesday group, this week, meets in Cedaredge at The Lab (Main and 3rd).

In terms of information, we provide this YouTube video that says many of the things Dr. Deegan does in his presentations, but in a different way. Sometimes hearing the same thing said by someone else helps! Note however that this is a sobering take in Dementia.

CareGiver:

Jan 15, 20226 the Delta Group had a discussion about how people with Dementia see the world. I noted that Dr. Natalie just discussed how reality and delusion are not different for the person with Dementia, just for us. See

Also, we discussed contacts for Region 10, which are provided here. These people are considered "Options Counselors" who can help you find help, if the help is still available. Scroll to the bottom of the page for the options counselor by county.

We hope this helps!

Welcome to Another Week in the Dementia Universe:

This week, we have had some challenges related to the normal world, wherein the folks at Crossroads have closed the facility due to a flue breakout. Thus, the delay in making announcements related to meetings. So here you go,

First, we meet Wednesday at the Hotchkiss Town Hall, for those living in the North Fork area. The meeting begins at 1:30 p.m. If you usually attend the Delta meeting at Crossroads, we are now temporarily meeting at the Delta Hospital in Classroom A. This meeting also starts at 1:30, but it is on Thursday as usual.

Finally, I refer you to this link for Alzheimer's Today, the quarterly magazine from the Alzheimer's Foundation of America.

https://alzfdn.org/alzheimers-today-latest-issue/

The AFA is the organization that is currently an affiliate of ASEDD. You should join; it is free. In the issue referenced above, there is a discussion about Bruce Willis and FTD (Frontal Temporal Dementia).

Although I recommend you read the entire magazine, I would like to focus on Page 4 "Good for Your Brain", where there are notes about how to fight against dementia. Page 5, "Caregiver Life", where there are notes about how to improve your health. Finally, Page 6, "Research Updates", specifically the discussion of Lithium Orotate.

According to Jess, who has read extensively on the subject, the latter might be better than the off-schedule use of some antidepressants/anti-anxiety add-ons currently used for agitation. Jess is not an MD, but does have some training in neuroscience.

We hope this helps!

Welcome to Another Week in the Dementia Universe!

This one brings on the New Year and the end of the Holidays. We hope yours was good!

Due to the timing of these Christmas and New Years happening on Thursdays, and the fact that the 31st is the fifth Wednesday in December, we enter another week without a meeting.

Personally (Jess Speaking), I could have used a meeting. Despite my knowledge and experience, I too have times when I forget the guidelines. Knowing that I must forgive myself, it helps to talk with others about what happened (but not this week).

Want to know more?

Join us in January for the first meeting of the year. January 7 we will be in Cedaredge at The Lab (Main and 3rd) and on January 8 at Crossroads Assisted Living in Delta. Both meetings start at 1:30 p.m.

Let others who are in similar situations provide you with Guidance and Understanding!

Welcome to Another Week in the Dementia Universe:

Is your world relatively normal with the Holidays arriving, or are you in the situation where your loved one does not know one day from another? Regardless of the extremes, the points between can be hard to deal with as well.

This week we have one meeting to help! Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in Hotchkiss at the Town Hall! This is our ONLY meeting this week and the LAST meeting of the year. We will not meet again until Jan. 7 (2026) in Cedaredge at the Lab, with the Delta meeting returning on Jan 8.

If you need to talk, please reach out via e-mail or the Facebook Group! The latter is private and only Support Group members will see the posts. Friend Gayla Michaud or Jess Deegan to be added to the group!

Jess will probably be there at some point in the next two weeks!

Welcome to Another Week in the Dementia Universe!

The Holidays are approaching rapidly, which may or may not affect/effect your loved one with Dementia. Often, the additional activities around the Holidays can be confusing or mean nothing!

Want to understand more? Join us at one of two meetings!

First, in the North Fork area at the Hotchkiss Town Hall on Wednesday, beginning at 1:30 p.m. Second, as always (almost) on Thursday at Crossroads Assisted Living, in the Activities room of the main building (also starting at 1:30 p.m.).

Dr. Deegan has discussed the implications of changes in the brain in terms of Perception for the person with Dementia. Here Dr. Natalie discusses this as well, but she may say it in a way that makes more sense to you.

Dementia doesn’t just affect memory — it changes how a person senses, how they see, hear, feel, taste, and even smell the world around them. These sensory ch...
