Founded in Deerfield, Massachusetts in 1870 as the first historical society in Western Massachusetts, today the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association is a vibrant regional organization, including the Memorial Hall Museum and Library, Deerfield Teachers’ Center, Indian House Children’s Museum, and Community Outreach projects. The Old Deerfield Craft Fairs (http://www.deerfield-craft.org/) are major fundraisers, supporting all aspects of the organization's work.

This vessel was made and used by Indigenous people in Deerfield, Massachusetts, between 6,000 and 3,000 years ago. It is made from a soft stone that could be carved and ground into the desired shape. This stone bowl is typical of what Eastern Woodlands peoples, including the Pocumtucks in the area that is now called Deerfield, Massachusetts, used for cooking and preparing food. The bowl, filled with a soup or stew, would be placed into or next to a fire. Smaller stones would be heated in the fire and placed in the container of food to cook it. This bowl might also have been used as a mortar. Items, such as nuts, would be placed in it and a pestle would be used to hammer on and/or grind the bowl’s contents into a flour. https://americancenturies.org/collection/1985-0409/

“This electrified wringer washing machine, with copper washtub on square metal stand, painted turquoise, belonged to my Polish immigrant paternal grandparents, Antonina and Jan Sojka of Turners Falls, MA. Most likely purchased on the payment plan, this state-of-the-art washing machine was manufactured by Voss Brothers, c. 1925, in Davenport, Iowa. In 1925, the Sojkas had nine children, ranging from newborn to age 16. There were six boys and three girls which meant there was a lot of dirty laundry and so an electric washing machine would be a great labor saving device.” ~Jeanne Sojka, PVMA Business Manager

Among Northeast Woodland peoples, women and girls were the tenders of gardens. They would have used hoes to cultivate the “Three Sisters”- corn, beans, and squash. The Deerfield River port of Cheapside in Deerfield, Massachusetts, became part of Greenfield in 1896, after many petitions by residents of Greenfield.
