This centerpiece titled “Mayflower” was embroidered by the Deerfield Society of Blue and White Needlework in Deerfield, Massachusetts. It is worked with cotton thread in shades of beige, blue, green, and rust on linen cloth. It originally sold for twenty dollars. Many of the original sketches and paper patterns for the society’s needlework survive and are preserved in Memorial Hall Museum in Deerfield. https://americancenturies.org/collection/nbw-031/

This pieced and appliqued quilt was created by either F***y Hoyt Wilson, or her mother Betsy Hoyt Wilson, both of Deerfield, Massachusetts. Piecing involves sewing geometric shapes together. On this Memorial Day, we think how memorial and memory are closely related words. They are from the same Latin root for “bringing to mind”. PVMA is very much committed to the business of “memory.” We hope you can visit Memorial Hall Museum this season to view the memories-the mementos.
