Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association Memorial Hall Museum and Library, Deerfield Teachers’ Center, Indian House Memorial Children's Museum and Old Deerfield Craft Fairs

Founded in Deerfield, Massachusetts in 1870 as the first historical society in Western Massachusetts, today the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association is a vibrant regional organization, including the Memorial Hall Museum and Library, Deerfield Teachers’ Center, Indian House Children’s Museum, and Community Outreach projects. The Old Deerfield Craft Fairs (http://www.deerfield-craft.org/) are major fundraisers, supporting all aspects of the organization's work.

This photograph was reproduced in Madeline Yale Wynne’s “Maker of Baskets” published in Good Housekeeping November of 1901. Wynne notes that Deerfield, Massachusetts, baskets were being woven by workers between the ages of six and sixty years of age. She writes “Women have always been the makers of baskets; it has always been a woman’s art.” Raffia can be seen hanging from the post on the right. Visit our exhibit this weekend titled, “Brewing Massachusetts: How B**r Shaped the Bay State,” made possible by a grant from Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism (MOTT). The exhibit at the Indian House Memorial, 107 Main street in Old Deerfield, will be open Friday - Sunday, 11 am–4:30 pm, May 30 - October 11, 2026. As we prepare for the 50th Old Deerfield Fall Arts & Crafts Festival on September 19 & 20, 2026, we continue to highlight the people involved with the American Arts & Crafts Movement in the early 20th century in Deerfield, Massachusetts. The Gazette and Courier of Greenfield, Massachusetts first mentioned the arrival of the potter Chauncey Thomas (1877 - 1950) to Deerfield in the fall of 1909. "The Deerfield Pottery," the paper promised, "bids fair to be an interesting asset to the village. Frances Allen (1854-1941) and Mary Allen (1858-1941) began working as photographers after progressive deafness obliged them to reassess their chosen vocation of teaching.
