DC Raymond Downey Father's Day "Forever Running" 5K Run/Walk

DC Raymond Downey Father's Day "Forever Running" 5K Run/Walk 5K Charity Run After serving with the U.S. Marine Corps in the Middle East, Chief Downey was appointed to the FDNY on April 7, 1962.

In August of 2001, he was placed in charge of all SOC (Special Operations Command) operations - Rescue, Squad, Haz Mat and Marine - and promoted to Deputy Chief. Chief Downey's phenomenal 39-year career with the FDNY was built upon success after success and rescue after rescue. One of the most - if not the most decorated men in the Department, Chief Downey received five individual medals for valor

and 16 unit citations. Additionally, he was awarded the Administration Medal in 1995 for his efforts on the Bunker Gear Program and interim quartermaster system. Chief Raymond Downey's Fire Department accomplishments are legendary and monumental. Below is a summary of his many achievements:

> Deputy Chief of Special Operations Command, FDNY

> Panel member of the presidential committee on terrorism known as the "Gilmore Commission," which has been assessing domestic response capabilities for terrorism involving weapons of mass destruction

> Task force leader for the New York City Urban Search and Rescue Team, which responds to disasters both around the country and within New York State

> Task force leader for National Disasters, whose team responded to the Oklahoma City Bombing, Hurricane Marilyn and the bombing at the Atlanta Olympics

> His team was recently selected by F.E.M.A. to be trained for weapons of mass destruction and will be on standby for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City

> Author of the book The Rescue Company and a series of videos on collapse operations

> Recipient of the "Crystal Apple Award" issued by Mayor Giuliani on July 23, 2001

> Chief of Rescue Operations, FDNY during the World Trade Center bombing in 1993

> Team leader in response to Hurricanes Hugo, Andres, Fran, Marilyn and Opal

> National Wrestling Hall of Fame (Medal of Courage, awarded in June, 2002)

The Downey Family is very excited to host the 23rd Annual D.C. Raymond M Downey "Forever Running" Memorial 5K Run/Walk. The race will be held on Sunday June 16th, 2024 starting at 9:30 am We will once again remember our hero Dad as well as all those first responders and civilians killed on Sept. 11, 2001. We would like to thank you for your past support which has made our run so successful. We are especially grateful to the Deer Park Fire Department who will host our run at the Deer Park FD Training Center at 973 Nichols Road( DC Raymond Downey Road) once again this year. The Downey Family has raised over 1 million dollars in the last 23years and will continue to give back to the Deer Park Community and the many organizations our Dad felt strongly about. Registration is open and discounted until March 29, 2024. We are looking forward to seeing you and your families on June 16, 2024.

Thank you to ALL that registered! We had over 1,800 registered runners! We had registrants from 20 states- Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, Washington DC, and West Virginia.

Thank you to the Deer Park Teacher’s Association- who were recipients of this year’s ‘Volunteer of the Year’ award!
Thank You especially to the Deer Park Fire Department for your support and the use of the fields at your Training Facility! Our new venue couldn’t have been better! We are already looking forward to seeing all of you again next year!

in memory of Chief Ray Downey and those that were lost that day.
