Subject: Why the Oct. 7 Facilities Strategy Meeting affects every Dedham taxpayer and parent
Hello Fellow Dedham Residents,
On October 7, I attended the Dedham Facilities Strategy Meeting, and it was an eye-opener. A staggeringly large percentage of Dedham’s municipal and school buildings are currently in poor condition. Maintaining aging structures in this state leads to increased municipal spending due to skyrocketing emergency maintenance costs, which are funded by us as taxpayers.
The purpose of this meeting was to identify creative ways to address infrastructure in poor condition. Many of our buildings have code violations and major, costly mechanical components reaching their end-of-life cycle. In most cases, continually patching up these older structures is simply beyond the financial resources of the town.
Compounding this fiscal issue is a human one: many of these structures house our CHILDREN. The quality of their learning environment—including poor air quality, inadequate safety measures, limited programming space, lack of accessibility, and outdated technology—is adversely affecting their development and education.
Furthermore, while the schools require a long-term vision, our town's most immediate and critical safety priority is the East Dedham Fire Department building, which is in critical condition and desperately needs structural intervention.
How We Can Take Action:
We cannot afford to stay silent or ignore the data. To protect our tax dollars, our public safety, and our children's future, we need a united town response:
• Review the Findings: Read the finalized Facilities Existing Conditions Report released by the town to see the state of your neighborhood's buildings. Each building is listed with its current condition, deficiencies and recommended maintenance (See Link).
• Show Up and Speak Out: Keep an eye out for upcoming School Committee and Select Board meetings on the Be Heard Dedham Facilities Management Project (FMP) Page.
We need parents, neighbors, and taxpayers in those seats making our voices heard in decision making.
