PACT - Parents and Children Together

PACT - Parents and Children Together Parents And Children Together (PACT) is a dynamic organization committed to preventing child abuse and neglect in Morgan County, Alabama.

In the mid 70’s, Gail Hurst was deeply moved by an atrocious story of child abuse that happened in Tennessee. A young girl died as the result of the abuse. The story touched Gail’s heart as the young girl pictured reminded her of one of her own daughters, who happened to be the same age of the child. Gail thought surely something could be done to protect children. The results of her actions would

have been impossible to foretell. The history of PACT is truly a testament to the idea that one person can make a difference. Gail “got the ball rolling” and was not afraid to ask her friends and neighbors for help. The final result of her initial work is Parents & Children Together Family Resource Center. PACT was founded in 1978 and was one of the first comprehensive child abuse prevention agencies in the Southeast.

Sending your child to summer camp and are unsure about what to ask or even what policies should be in place? Don't worry, we've got you.

It can feel uncomfortable asking questions about child abuse prevention, but reputable camps welcome the conversation. Their policies should be clear and transparent.

Here is a checklist of what questions to ask and policies to look for BEFORE drop-off day arrives!

Child abuse is an epidemic, but one we have the power to end. Consider the following tomorrow during the Day of Giving:

FIRST, seek out prevention education. Awareness alone does not protect kids. You do not have to be a parent to receive training on how to be a safe resource to a child.

SECOND, give to an organization that provides primary prevention for child abuse (hint: that's us). Invest in your community, for the children YOU know, so we can be proactive to stop child abuse before it begins.

Donating to programs, like PACT, helps to transition Morgan County from being reactive to PROACTIVE. Your gift can change the narrative of a child's life.

This week is National Home Visiting Week. So our final feature of "Spotlight on Prevention" is reserved for our 5th program.

No child is born with an instruction manual, yet the stakes are high since children under the age of 5 are the most vulnerable to abuse. In fact, in Alabama, nearly 40% of child abuse happens before the child is 5.

That's where PAT steps in to help change the narrative. Their home visitation program partners with parents to provide the tools needed to promote optimal development and build positive interactions.
