DECATUR, AL —Thursday, March 19, 2026 — Delano Park Conservancy is proud to announce our upcoming community event, “Day in the Park at Delano: All About Birds and
Trees,” taking place on March 19, 2026, at historic Delano Park. This family-friendly educational event highlights the vital connection between North Alabama’s native tree canopy
and the majestic birds of prey that depend on it for survival.
The event’s centerpiece will be a live demonstration by Raptor Trek, featuring Red-tailed Hawks, Owls, and other native raptors. These avian ambassadors will provide attendees with a
rare, up-close look at the power and beauty of birds of prey, while experts explain the critical role that legacy trees play in providing nesting sites and hunting grounds within urban park
settings.
"Our mission has always been to provide a venue for learning about our region's heritage and natural beauty," said Barbara Kelly, a spokesperson for the Delano Park Conservancy. "By

Decatur’s Legacy Trees Take Center Stage at
“Day in the Park at Delano” Event
In a celebration of nature, literature, and local wildlife, the Decatur Public Library, Delano Park Conservancy, and Decatur Parks and Recreation are proud to present “Day in the Park at Delano: All About Birds and Trees.” The event will take place on Thursday, March 19, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM near the historic stone bridge on Eighth Avenue Southeast.

This free community event highlights the vital connection between Decatur’s historic urban canopy and the majestic birds that call it home. “Ancient trees are precious... they play host to such a rich community of life,” said Sir David Attenborough, a sentiment that anchors this year’s theme: Trees as a Home.

The morning begins with a guided Bird Walk at 9:00 AM led by expert Ava Lyerly, followed by a themed Story Time at 10:00 AM hosted by the Decatur Public Library. The highlight of the morning features Raptor Trek from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM, where experts will showcase live birds of prey and explain why tall legacy trees are essential for their nesting and hunting success.
“Our goal is to show the community that Delano Park is more than just a green space; it’s a living habitat,” said a representative of the Delano Park Conservancy. All ages are welcome to this educational morning in the heart of Decatur.

Carolyn Cortner Smith built the stone structures in Delano Park 90 years ago as an architect for the Civilian Works Administration when Decatur was struggling during the depression. We had lost our biggest industry of the L&N Shops and Decatur's one crop, cotton, was only worth 5 cents a pound. Things were bleak in our town, and Carolyn Cortner Smith brought us the Rose Garden, the wading pool, and other stone structures that provided beauty and hope for our people.
