How do we know what we know about the past?

Flotation lets archaeologists learn about paleoethobotany (the study of how people interacted with plants in the past) by isolating tiny seeds, grains, and other plant materials from soil samples in a tank of water, separating them into floating light fraction and sinking heavy fraction, and sorting and analyzing them once dried!

Archaeology is so much more than digging! Scientists spend much more time analyzing artifacts in the lab and writing reports than they do excavating in the field.

Join FPAN Southeast and Dr. Meryl Shriver-Rice of Rollins College for a flotation demonstration before cataloging and cleaning collections from our Shining a Light on the Past Field School, in partnership with the Jupiter Inlet Lighthhouse Outstanding Natural Area and the Bureau of Land Management!

Please wear closed-toe shoes, avoid dangling jewelry, and be advised that food and water are not permitted inside the lab. FAU Davie West is an accessible building but does have a short path from the parking lot to the entrance, as well as between the elevators and lab on the 4th floor.

We had a great time at our first Lab Day of the summer last Saturday at JupiterInletLighthouse&Museum , where we got to wash oyster shell, identify different shell species and worm rock under our microscope, and talk about what it takes to start a career in archaeology! Every year on June 19th, Juneteenth celebrates President Abraham Lincoln’s issuing of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, releasing Africans and African-Americans from chattel enslavement.

But the story of Emancipation Day doesn’t end there…

Florida’s Emancipation Day came two years later, on May 20th, 1865, when Union General Edward M. McCook read the Emancipation Proclamation to a crowd in Tallahassee.

Juneteenth is a deeply important part of our collective history and a time to honor African American culture, freedom, resilience, and achievements.
