Join us for a day to honor our history by learning best practices and care for historic cemeteries as we engage in discussion, learn, and listen while joining hands to preserve a local historic cemetery!

Through engaging in-person activities hosted in conjunction with OHP’s annual History Collaborative, the Burial Grounds Context Study will incorporate Miami-Dade County’s first hosted Cemetery Clean Up led by the professional staff of the Florida Public Archaeology Network together with OHP, HistoryMiami, and Miami-Dade Public Library System.

12:20-1:00 – Intro/Overview Presentations by
Brownsville Civic Neighborhood Association, MDPLS Digital Collections, and HistoryMiami.

1:00-2:00
FPAN – Cemetery Resource Protection Training program overview, best practices and legal reminders for cemetery preservation

2:00-2:30
Recording oral histories and digitizing records! Attendees are free to start recording oral histories, discuss digitizing materials, etc. with HistoryMiami and Digital Collections at any time during the event!

2:30-5:00
Attendees can opt to move over to Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery at this time to participate in a mini cemetery clean-up, lead by FPAN.

OHP will have a 15-passenger van to shuttle attendees back and forth! The indoor portion in the community center will remain open while the cemetery clean-up is happening, for people who want to stay and record oral histories, digitize materials, be interviewed, etc.

We hope to see you on Saturday, May 16th, from 12 pm to 5 pm, at the Jefferson Reaves Sr. Park Community Center!

Our brilliant field school students have spent the last few weeks learning how to dig shovel tests, one of the methods archaeologists use to research the past!

Our free field school aims to prepare early-career archaeologists to enter the workforce--without breaking the bank!

Last week, we had an amazing time sprucing up headstones with D2 at the beautiful Hallandale Beach Cemetery!

D2 is a biocide that gently removes moss, lichen, and algae from stone monuments and keeps working for 2-3 years after it's applied--without damaging soft stones with harsh cleaning agents like bleach!

With its earliest known burial dating to 1914 (although ongoing research may point to earlier dates), this cemetery is the final resting place for many of Broward County's early pioneers!

Keep an eye out for upcoming volunteer opportunities at Hallandale Beach Cemetery!

*****************
