The Hurt Hub@Davidson convenes innovators and entrepreneurs in the Davidson college community and the Lake Norman region to catalyze innovative solutions to critical problems. We facilitate access and exposure to innovation and entrepreneurship for all Davidson students, alumni, faculty, Hurt Hub co-workers, and community members through educational programming, experiential learning in a safe environment, an inclusive co-working space, uncompromising ethics, a robust mentor network, and access to startup capital.

"Failure is only failure if you fail to learn from it."

That's Jay Hurt '88, the alum our name comes from, on the lesson that shaped his career.

After four years in the corporate world, Jay took a career coach's suggestion to try entrepreneurship and set out to grow his father's company, The Hurt Company. Over about a decade he built it around reliability-based solutions in lubricant and fuel distribution, then co-founded RelaDyne by bringing four distributors together.

When Davidson's former president Carol Quillen asked him to help bring her vision for the college's future to life, he said yes. His gift created the Jay Hurt Hub for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, a dedicated space where Davidson students and community members develop their own ideas, learn from what goes wrong, and keep building.

Applications are LIVE for the 2027 Davidson College Entrepreneurship Trek to San Francisco! 🌉

Spend Spring Break (March 7 to 12) in the startup world of San Francisco. Everything is covered, so the trip is completely free for the six students selected.

DEC membership isn’t required, but we’re looking for students with a demonstrated interest in entrepreneurship.

🎉 Meet the fall 2026 Avinger Impact Fund finalists!

Four Davidson College student ventures are heading to the final round of this semester’s Avinger Impact Fund, which awards microgrants of up to $8,000 to student entrepreneurs ready to grow their ideas and themselves along the way.

Meet the founders:

🌿 Omer Alpa ‘27, House of Naushad: traditional oil-based perfumes, with plans to expand sales and better understand customers.

🧭 Arnav Biyani ‘29 and Rajeev Krishnamurthy ‘28, Make It So: a career-first planning platform connecting students with courses, careers, people, alumni, and time.

💪 Estella Kallay ‘28 and Miles Kennedy ‘28, Mendor: a supplement vending machine company serving students who want to improve their health.

🎹 Vimi Wang ‘27, Play It Now: personalized online piano tutoring and video tutorials for the most popular pop songs.

The finalists pitch to the Avinger Committee on November 6, and the winner(s) will be announced at the 3rd Annual Hurt Hub Innovation and Entrepreneurship Showcase on November 18.
