Interested in volunteering with our LEARN Works educational team?

Priority volunteer registration is closed, but you can still apply to be considered in the next review cycle by September 8!

What you’ll do:
Make a difference in the lives of children by supporting our LEARN Works students and helping them progress toward grade level reading. You’ll tutor, mentor and help ensure they’re safe and warmly welcome!

Our Street Outreach team helps provide basic needs, resources and vital services to people experiencing homelessness across north Mecklenburg County.

Though the summer is winding down, our unhoused neighbors still need vital supplies while they work toward increasing stability.

You can make a difference today by donating a few of these often overlooked items:
-Wipes
-Sunscreen/spf
-Deodorant
-No-melt snacks (like applesauce pouches, jerky, protein bars, trail mix)
-Bug spray
-Mini first aid kits
-Lip balm

These supplies are vital on sunny days and can mean a safer experience for our neighbors in need.

Here’s a few ways you can jump right in TODAY:

TIME - Volunteer at our Davidson location. We’re always looking for volunteers for our community events, around the office, our educational programs, asset building initiatives and more!
TALENT - If you’ve have a professional skill or valuable ability / talent, we can use them! Whether you’re a paralegal, a singer, anything in between or just somewhere who makes other people feel really welcome, there’s room for you at AJC.
TREASURE - If you have the budget to donate, connections to funding sources or a mixture of these, we welcome it.
TENACITY - This is one of our favorites because anyone — everyone — can do it! Share our work, share this post, tell our story…talk about Ada Jenkins Center with your friends, your colleagues, everything adds up!

We like to keep things honest about volunteering with our LEARN Works afterschool program…

You might be asked how old you are, you might lose in a race to a kid half your height, and you will almost certainly regret not signing up sooner.

ENROLLMENT IS NOW OPEN for our LEARN Works afterschool programs, where we offer a structured and caring environment for elementary students during the school year. Running from mid-September through mid-May, Monday through Friday, we provide two options at the Ada Jenkins Center and our partner school, with transportation included through our school partnerships.

📚FREE: LEARN Works Afterschool Academic & Enrichment Program
Tailored for K-5 students who are 1 to 2 grade levels behind in reading, this program offers dedicated reading and academic skill support alongside engaging enrichment opportunities, like career exploration, social-emotional learning, financial literacy and family engagement resources.

📒$50/week: LEARN Works Afterschool Care Program
For all K-5 students (regardless of reading level), this programs provides a safe and engaging space with the same enrichment opportunities as the Academic & Enrichment Program.

Strong partnerships make stronger communities!

One example of this is our longtime partnership with Davidson Community Foundation (DCF). The foundation’s support over the years has helped AJC expand access to critical financial assistance for neighbors facing hardship.

“The number one need we [see] is housing,”, AJC’s CEO Harold Rice said. “The foundation was really instrumental in helping us support families in need, in crisis.”

DCF’s investment in our community strengthens the connections that make lasting impact possible.

We know that strong relationships create stronger communities. Partnerships like this allow us to connect people with resources, stability, and hope…right here in our community!

Story time meets playtime!

We’so excited to invite our families to a special Together Tales event alongside Discovery Place tomorrow, Thursday, August 6th at the Ada Jenkins Center!

Hosted by our LEARNWorks program, this family engagement day is designed for K-5th grade students and their families. We explore, connect, and grow through the magic of storytelling and hands-on, interactive play.
