This week we had an incredible day of training on the Diversion Canal, bringing together emergency response teams from across our region for a large-scale exercise simulating a major pipeline leak.
Our local fire departments from both Maurepas and St. Amant, law enforcement, Ascension and Livingston Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (LOHSEP), Louisiana State Police, Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), neighboring parishes, and industry partners all came together to work through a simulated emergency, on the Diversion Canal.
The exercise covered everything from communication and coordination to containment, air monitoring, evacuations, and protecting our waterways.
But one of the most valuable things we gained yesterday wasn't just the training itself. It was the knowledge shared, the relationships built, and the connections made between agencies that may one day have to respond to a real emergency together.
With the number of pipelines running throughout Ascension Parish and our friends from Livingston Parish, preparation and cooperation are extremely important. All teams involved learned a tremendous amount from one another, identified ways to improve, and strengthened our ability to respond when our communities need us most.
Emergency Response teams from both Ascension and Livingston Parishes would like to thank every first responder, agency, and industry partner who participated. A special thank you to Canal Bank Club for being such great hosts and providing a staging area for this exercise.
Drills like this continue to help all our Emergency Response Teams work well with our Industry Partners. We also appreciate teaming up with our emergency response teams from Livingston Parish for this much needed multi-company drill on the water in both our Parishes.
