Dr. Jennifer Ellis is part of a rare and powerful legacy in medicine.

In 2015, she was recognized as one of only five board-certified Black female cardiothoracic surgeons in the United States.

A Washington, D.C. native, Ellis built a decades-long career in one of medicine’s most demanding specialties, helping change what representation looks like in cardiac surgery.

He’s taking care of his community.

Brooklyn gardener Kofi Thomas helped transform a 13,000-square-foot lot into the Good Life Garden.

What was once filled with trash is now a community green space that has distributed more than 10,000 pounds of food and created a place for healing, growth, and connection.

Emancipation Day in Jamaica is a national public holiday celebrated on August 1st that commemorates the abolition of slavery and honors the resilience of ancestors. It forms the start of the joint "Emancipendence" festive period leading up to Independence Day on August 6th.
The Slavery Abolition Act took effect on August 1, 1834, though it initially placed older enslaved individuals into a forced "apprenticeship" system.
Complete and unconditional freedom was finally won at midnight on July 31, 1838.
After years of being sidelined, the national holiday was officially reinstated by the Jamaican government in 1997.
Citizens often gather for commemorative vigils and reenactments on the night of July 31st, welcoming the dawn of August 1st much like freed ancestors did in 1838.
Festivities feature traditional drumming, dance, thanksgiving church services, and community gatherings at landmark sites like Emancipation Park in Kingston and the Seville Heritage Park in St. Ann.
Celebrations merge directly into Independence week events, featuring local concerts, festival queen coronations, and civic ceremonies.
